Sometimes I end up putting so much emphasis or effort in the smoked meat that I forget that people may want something else to go with it for dinner...

I'm not much of a cook but I'm not afraid to try making a couple of side dishes. What do you guys usually serve with smoked meats?

Skillet corn bread and/or jalapeño poppers with most anything. Corn on the cob if it is in season. My wife's cole slaw with pulled pork. Baked beans with ribs. We like Bush's, so we usually just open the can. I have made Franklin's baked bean recipe on occasion with brisket.

We don't seem to have consistent sides that we pick with chicken; not sure why.

Traditional minimalist pinto beans unless I've smoked rolled stuff pork loin. Then my wife likes to make here pan bread & fruit stuffing. Nothing's set in stone though.

A nice garden salad and maybe some beans. I'm doing low carb right now, so no beans, they are substituted with a green veggie or shrooms.

The more you cook the better you will get. I been doing this a long time and still have my failures but try to learn from them.

Mexican Cornbread, Potato Salad and baked beans. I make a great potato salad but I don't measure.

Here is the cornbread just did. Was very good and simple. I made muffins instead of pan:

2 eggs
2 Tablespoons vegetable oil
1/2 cup sour cream
1 (14.75 ounce) can cream style corn
1 cup freshly shredded sharp cheddar cheese*
2 (8.5 ounce) boxes Jiffy Corn Muffin Mix
1 medium jalapeno chopped

Preheat the oven to 400 F (204 C). Lightly coat a nonstick 8 x 8 pan with cooking spray.

In a large mixing bowl, whisk the eggs and oil together. Add in the sour cream, cream style corn, and most of the cheddar cheese (save a pinch of the cheese if you want to sprinkle some on top) and mix until combined. Add in the 2 boxes of Jiffy Corn Muffin Mix and stir until the mix is just wet. Don't over mix it. The batter should look slightly clumpy.

Pour the batter into the pan, place the sliced jalapenos on top of the batter and bake for about 40 - 45 minutes. You can test to see if it’s done by inserting a toothpick into the center. If the toothpick comes out clean, or with just a few crumbs, it’s done. If it comes out a bit wet, put the cornbread back in the oven for another few minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean.

Smoked baked beans, cole slaw, corn bread, fresh corn on the cob, Texas toast, salads.

And bourbon. Best side ever invented.

For us it depends on the meat that we are barbecuing. We love all of these things from time to time. Potato salad, macaroni salad, baked beans, mac n cheese, cornbread casserole, baked potatoes, tater tots, fries, pig shots are fun, shrimp skewers, fresh bread, onion rings, potato skins, cheese sticks, or anything else that strikes the fancy that day.

I can't believe I forgot about slaw, which is one of my favorite BBQ sides. I love vinegar based slaw dressings, seeing that I'm not really into May'O unless it's Dukes, which we have to order out west.
Furthermore, I also love macaroni and potato salads they are killer with BBQ as well, although I'm trying to stay away from carbs right now but will eat them on my cheat days.

For the most part, I cook meat. If anyone wants a side, they're more than welcome to bring one.

Two exceptions, and it doesn't happen very often. I make an adjusted version if Dutch's beans and Alton Brown's creamed corn cornbread.

IDK why, but I really like cold sides served with hot smoked food. My favorites are a good sweet vinegar slaw, homemade potato salad, and ranch pasta salad with tomatoes. It could be mostly because it reminds me of summertime.

Don't get me wrong, good mac and cheese, baked beans, and the like have their place in my heart too.

We love salads of lettuce, cabbage, and potato as the meat takes center stage.
I love pasta salads but wifey not so much

You had me chuckle. I've loved Dukes from years past but hard to find in MN. Local store changed distributor and added Dukes so convinced wife to try. She will not have any other mayo.

I just made some baby carrots with butter, brown sugar and red onions and they were yummy. I also do a macaroni salad with red onions, celery some parsley and with miracle whip and relish and spicy mustard. Optionally u can add some hard boiled eggs too

I order Duke's off Amazon, I buy 3 to 6 of the big jars at a time. In a pinch, I'll use Best foods and add a little sugar and white vinegar to replicate Duke's, it actually comes pretty close.
I guess I could always try it with a sugar substitute to make it more low carb.

I made this last couple times. I think it really the lemon juice and rind that wakes it up. I a Dukes fan also for most things.

1 bag coleslaw mix
1/2 cup miracle whip
1 TBS Pyure sugar
rind of lemon grated
1 ½ tablespoons lemon juice
1 tablespoon vinegar
½ teaspoon ground black pepper
¼ teaspoon salt
½ tsp celery seed
¼ tsp cayenne
