if your looking thru the shelves for some spices to buy most of them will give you sticker shock. so i decided to try my local hispanic store , i was amazed at how reasonable they were compared to public , kroger , ect. if you have one of these stores close i say go in and check it out, you might be pleasantly surprised, while your  there you might want to check out the meat also

Same up here in DC. Ethnic stores (or even just the ethnic aisle in the grocery store) are generally 20%-30% cheaper on things like spices and soup bases. We also have a couple of Amish and/or PA Dutch markets in the area that have whole and ground spices at greatly reduced prices. They ground ones are always fresh too. Meat is another story however...

Yep. And don't forget the ethnic deli's.  I get a lot of bulk spices and most of my sausage casings from local deli's.

Good luck and good smoking.

I really enjoy shopping in the Mexican Mkts. around here , I like to get them as whole as I can find and grind as needed, the shelf life of pre-ground is about a year, then it's time to replace them, while the whole Spices can sit in sealed containers for over 2 yrs. This is good for me (and probably others out there) as most my Spices-Cumin , Chiles , Cloves ,etc. are the grindable ones, that way if I find a Bulk Bargain , I can get it without worrying about spoilage or loss of flavor

.

Have fun and....................

There is a very large Mexican isle in our Walmart.

I guess it's because we are right in the middle of a gazillion orange groves.

Anyhow the spices are the same as the spice isle only about 1/4 the price.

Never figured out why, but that's where we check first when we need any.

Al,

Since Sam died I can never figure out Walmart. I remember when everything in Sams Club was made in the USA. Even had a banner in the Houston Club that proclaimed it.

Never figured out why folks would pay all that money for the name brands when the others are 1/4 of the price and in the same store
