hey Y'all,
spent an hour or so consuming the last thread regarding KitchenAid stand mixers. I don't Need one, but I do WANT one. I am far from being baker of anything, but have dreams of conjuring up my own New York-ish dough from scratch. We watch entirely too much food network and I have aspirations of a dough ball rotating on a hook.
I know dropping 5on a mixer just for dough might not be the wisest money I've spent, but I've done dumb things before.
Mama Is quite the creator of goodies which I haven't shard here, so here I go.
So if y'all are using the K/A, which model or wattage?
I'm looking at 4.5 or 5qt, with at least 300 watts. overspending is not my goal so if 4.5 would suffice, then so be it.
I know this isn't a baking forum, but don't want to wade into another "neighborhood" and trust Y'all.
I CAN wait until black Friday, but have a couple amazon cards banked and access to the dreaded warehouse joints.
I also have thought about small batches of custom grind meats for my own smash burgers.
That's all. thanks for enlightenment
John

We have had the old “classic” 4.5q that is 300 wats I believe. An absolutely indispensable tool in the kitchen, I could, but wouldn’t want to live without one. Many times I’ve thought of upgrading to the mixer with adjustable height on the bowl but the old Classic just keeps going strong so haven’t yet but might still just to keep up with the “Jones’s” lol. When I do upgrade I will also buy the pasta maker.
What we have had is the tilt head but thinking the fixed head bowl lift style would maybe be better.

This is along the lines that I would look to for upgrade.

I bought my first and only KA mixer in Nov. 2015. Its a Professional 600, 575 watt, 6 quart, metal gears. All I use it for is pizza dough, and its made a lot over the years and got 25lbs of flour coming in today. Still works like day one.

Totally worth having any KA stand mixer, they just work!

Tilt head for 20 something years, have read lift head for breads, been totally happy, have several attachments, food slicer/grinder/extruder. have ground up a lot of deer and briskets with mine. I don't like the idea of having to take the paddle off to get bowl off the unit with the lift style, never used 1 but have watched a lot of cooking shows. was just getting into making pasta with the extruder setup when I found out I had diabetes really bad, I cold turkeyed a bunch of eating habits, I still have most of the kit and may drag it out for a test run. sugar is better but still a struggle every day.

IT'S THE GIFT THAT KEEPS ON GIVING. $250 STARTS YOU OFF WITH THE 4.5 BOWL TODAY, YOU'RE MAKING THE BEST BURGER BUNS ON THE PLANET TOMORROW, PIZZA TOO

THEN YOU WILL COME TO REALIZE HOW EMPTY YOUR LIFE HAS BEEN DUE TO NOT MAKING YOUR OWN FRESH PASTA, NOTHING FROM THE LOCAL MARKET CAN COME CLOSE TO THE FANTASTIC FLAVOR OF FRESH MADE FETTUCINI.

THERE'S A FEW MORE ATTACHMENTS TO SPEND MONEY ON, SOME OF WHICH YOU MIGHT USE ONCE AND RETIRE. THE LITTLE LADY CAN GO CRAZY CREATING SUGARY TREATS THE WHOLE FAMILY CAN ENJOY. HOW HAVE YOU LIVED THIS LONG WITHOUT ONE? IT'S ONLY MONEY, YOU KNOW YOU WANT ONE, GET IT! RAY

Larger size tilt bowl with highest wattage is my vote. As others said it's just an indispensable kitchen tool. Beyond mixing I use the grinder, shredder and grater. I prefer the tilt head over the pro lift models. If you are a prime member keep an eye out for possible prime days deal on one.

We have the artisan model KSM150, which I think is a bit lower on the todem pole compared to other models. But it works great for us. Agreed that it's a must have in the kitchen.

Mike,

Concerning diabetes and pasta, I found out that if I cook the pasta and then let it set in the 'frig overnight and eat it the next day, my numbers barely rose.
I have no idea why, but it works for me. Give it a try once, you have nothing to lose.

We have always just had the tilt head but the last few years thought the lift bowl would be better. I’m surprised at all the negative feedback on the lift bowl. Good to know, guess I’ll just pass and when we upgrade we will go back with the tilt head but go bigger although the 4.5q pretty much dose everything we need. KA mixers are work horses.

Thank you all !!!
I am SO ACDC on things like this. found out Target has an exclusive on the 4.5 power plus with 300watts power and a SS bowl with handle. $279.00
Classic was less power and no bowl handle. (you're welcome mama.)

You both will appreciate that. Nice buy.

I’ll warn you this though. That wire whip can’t spin in the dishwasher because the head is aluminum and will oxidize in the washer, or at least ours is hand wash only. The paddle and hook are good to go as they are coated.

I had an Artisan.

I killed it grinding meat. It's all good if you grind a bit here and there, I was really putting mine though grinder hell. I shouldn't have tossed it and instead repaired it, but when I sourced the parts I think I needed, it was pretty dear.

It made an awful lot of bread without ever bogging down. Semi frozen meat that was a bit too frozen - that was the death dealer. I always figured that if I want to make bread again (and that bug hasn't bitten me yet) that I could live with something 1/3 the cost of a nice KA

Last time I ground 8 lbs of ham mine heated up pretty bad. I've got a small grinder I'll use from now on unless I'm just grinding a few lbs.

you think the grinder accessory killed it? Cuse I'm chomping for one of the metal ones. but I don't stuff anything and would only use it sparingly to make my own burgers for smash burgers.
