Also, can I download the ISO and install it later, or do you need to activate your license ID within a year?  Im pretty unsure about this whole thing and would like to see where things shake out.  Appears MS is also data-mining everything you do with Windows 10.

Lots of things will change: software packages are trending towards subscription based service: pay yearly (and dearly lol) for say MS office instead of buying it outright.

I just read up on their business model. This looks like a bad idea to me. They will give you the operating system for free then expect you to buy apps (like windows media center perhaps down the road).

Thing is, it works for Apple because they have thousands of independent smart people running around trying to come up with ideas for their own apps. How would MS ever be able to compete? They cannot be the #1 app for everything. So therefore windows would be sub par. Naaaa this looks like a mess. MS is taking the gamble of the century here.
Microsoft makes the majority of their money from enterprise licensing. Lowering fragmentation (what they're trying to do here) is huge for them if they can pull it off.

Ive been reading a lot of scary stuff about privacy concerns.  Im not a tinfoil hat guy, but I dont dig the idea of someone watching every move I make on the web, particularly when I visit the booby sites.  Just does seem right.

Get used to it if you have a smartphone, satellite/cable, or pretty much any other connected consumer product these days.

You folks who have installed Win 10: I hope you did your homework about avoiding the one click 'let Microsoft make all the configuration settings" option. It will open your machine up to them and they can start it remotely and turn on your microphone and camera and report all sorts of things about you back to the database in the sky. Now, I know that this doesn't bother some folks as much as it does my paranoid self, but I URGE YOU ALL TO DO SOME SEARCHING ON THE INTERNET FOR THE MANY ARTICLES THAT HAVE BEEN WRITTEN ABOUT THIS.

We have been lulled into the easy way and have thrown caution to the wind far too easily, IMO.

I am just going to put my .02 on the whole conspiracy of Microsoft setting you up so they can "prowl"

through your stuff. just so it be known I'm not here to take up for them but i do believe if the people that created windows wanted into your stuff they can get it regardless of how you set anything up.

and if the federal govt. wanted into your stuff.... im sure there is a couple of people on their staff that is stationed deep under ground that can hack any computer they see fit.

Yeah the more I read about this, the shadier it gets.  This kind of free pass into a person's PC can be abused.  Not by the government or some tin foil hat shadow conspiracy stuff, but by malicious hackers or identity thieves.  Windows 7 all the way for me until I'm forced to upgrade.

Folks who are concerned about Microsoft/big brother/hackers turning on their cameras remotely...I am sure they covered it with masking tape long time ago.
Anyhow...these f@ckers would only peek once:after seeing us, middle-aged (or older) , overweight, shirtless, hairy men, loading q-views on SMF, they would turn that camera right off. LOL.

Since the privacy concerns came up - here is another one: WiFi sense. A user can share your wifi network access with social media friends. They won't see passwords though.

If it's free, how is MS going to make their money?

By selling information about you to others . . . information gathered rather surreptitiously from the unwitting who choose the easy way instead of the informed way.

This operating system combined with the current state of technology and its almost universal deployment make it big brothers eyes and ears into your home. If you think that kind of power will be exercised magnanimously and without abuse, I ask you to consider all that has been in the news in the past few years. Only the tiniest bit of the truth has been reported.

Remember, just because you are paranoid does not mean that the baddies are not out to get you.
:sausage:

As for turning this forum into a geek gathering spot, NO! But informing my brothers in smoke of threats I feel is a debt I owe for being allowed into the group. Besides, at 73 I'm way to damned old to be called a geek (even if I have dealt with computers in most forms since the mid 1960s).

I read last night it emails you reports on ALL activity of chosen users, by default, so you can monitor each and every website your kid visits.  This would be heaven for snooping wives.  "Honey, can you please explain to me why you were on hot-college-girls-with-smokedmeat.com for 6 hours last night?"........

I punched cards in college for this HUGE vac-tube goliath. I started with  DOS at the house and with the exception of Millennium have up graded to each and bitched every time. 95 and 98SE being the best.

I grabbed 10 a few weeks back and its the smoothest transition I have ever seen. Why, because its taken the programs (options), out of the computer and made your computer a telephone based business machine.

I am still finding things I can't do, but the Win 10 keeps telling me to turn my start-up into an app machine to compensate. Its now all black and white and you buy the apps you want. You no longer customize your computer to make it work for you, you buy an app that does something similar to what you want. They are making the computer now a mass media center, or maybe a better term would be a electronic organizer.

Its been a long long time since I played around the actually OS, and I swore this build was my last one I'll ever do myself due to losing that knowledge base. And its been over 25 years since I bought one. BTW I was a gamer always looking for the fastest, LOL.....I remember building a Pentium 33 (my first build) and not going to the 75 because they couldn't solve a simple heat problem..

Anyway, I have not used a cell phone in over 15 years. Windows 10 really offers me nothing. But it is a solid platform so far.

Edit::

I gotta edit to add this......... App crazy right, we now have smokers controlled by a telephone..... 45 years ago when trying to piece together Fortran I would have laughed in your face. Course we all wanted one of "Diet Smith's" Dick Tracy telephone wrist watches too.....

Maybe I should start cooking in the nude in front of my laptop and phone....

Oh, sorry.

Lol......

One thing about Windows 10,  Edge is the default browser, and doesn't play nice with some of the features on SMF.  If you were and are using Chrome just make it your default browser.  works great. Also Firefox
