As of late I have been trying to answer some of the unanswered posts.

I haven't been welcoming new members lately there's just so many. Sorry New Guys

Anyhow I just noticed there's 800 unanswered posts (16 pages of 50)

I never remember that many going unanswered.

I know a lot are unanswerable but it just blew my mind, anyhow I am going to try and start each day off at SMF with a few unanswered posts.

Thanks Sqwib! Check the dates on them and also how many posts the OP has and when the last one was. I recently saw someone replied to a roll call (then about 5 more did too) that was 5 years old and it was the OP's only post, I don't think he is going to see his new welcomes!

Sometimes it gets so busy that it's hard to get to them all.. I do understand but I agree, they should all be getting answered. We may need to put a team of people together who just look for unanswered threads and try to get them an answer either through research on the forum or by just answering the question if you know the answer.

Sounds like a call to action!

I do appreciate you pointing this out.. hopefully, anyone who has a little time on their hands and wants to can help us out with this.

I am wondering how many of those are recent (last 30 days) and how many of them are from further back..

Jeff only about 50 in the last 90 days.

Sqwib, is there a way to search for unanswered posts?

Yes there is. At the top of the page you will see where it says "All Forums" Next to that is says "New Post". Click on the drop down arrow next to that and you will get the following

View media item 169754
Then click on unanswered post.

Dave -

Highlight the Forums in the main bar and it shows the following categories

Forums - New Posts- Hot-Unanswered- I've Posted

I too check for unanswered and try to handle some. I have seen some double posts where I have posted an answer and there is a second that goes unanswered. But working together it will get done...JJ

I will definitely keep an eye on the dates.

And some are unanswerable like you guys mention one post and they're gone.

I know one forum I visit has some kind of time thing on it so when you go to post a reply on a page that is very old (not sure of how long) but a pop up will come up telling you the post is old and gives you the option to post anyway but asks why, I think there's 3 or 4 preset questions.

I see 30 posts in 30 days ?

Anyhow I wasn't complaining or asking for you guys to do anything, I just never noticed that many before.

I will definitely help out after all, I should know better and be more on top of things like this been here 5 years. Seems like my daily routine is checking New Posts only.

I have to admit though it's actually a drop in the bucket seeing the amount of posts daily, I gave up on welcoming newbies daily

I thought maybe it's a seasonal thing?

Is there a phrase that we could come up with to post on the unanswerable posts?  That way they would not be "unanswered" anymore.  Something like, "We appreciate your post, but we do not have an answer at this time".  I know it sounds corny, but it might clear up some of the drifting posts.  Also, I noticed a lot of them aren't questions or anything.  They just happen to be posts that no one saw fit to comment on.  Whether they be someones picture of something or whatever.  Who knows why no one ever commented on them, but they didn't.  I don't want to down play the importance of anyone's post cause it was obviously important to the poster or they wouldn't have posted it, but there should be a deadline on unanswered posts and then after that "waiting period" a general comment could be added to take it off the list.  Just my two cents.

Any reply at all will work. As long as there is 1 reply it wont report as unanswered.

Some posts like the one I did the other day for the FoodSaver Sale really don't need an answer - maybe I will just use "bump" for things like that

Kind of along these same lines, is there a way for members to exclude certain forums from the "view all new posts" button (http://www.smokingmeatforums.com/forum/newposts)?

When people, and usually moderators, welcome new members, one after another after another after another all at once, it really makes the "view all new posts" button useless because you'll have pages of the same "welcome to the forum!" posts one after another after another after another ...

I never realized you could go to unanswered posts. I will keep an eye on it now and see if I can help anyone in anyway.

Not sure what I can do to help. Like the idea of a team to watch out for these, however if that is the case. I would suggest that there be sub teams responsible for different subjects, not just "watch everything", sort of devide and conquer and not over whelm anyone.... Just my thoughts. I made the mistake to follow all threads and boy was that a mess and had to be fixed quickly......
