I am in the process of building a uds,and my question is about the exhaust port on my flat lid. I plan on using a 6-8 tube screwed into the bung. Can I use pvc to keep the lid lightweight. Would I have melting or chemical issues being on the exhaust side? Please help

I would stay away from PCV. Still alot of heat coming out the top.

Be sure and post some pictures

A light gauge aluminum pipe would weigh less than PVC. I wouldn't use PVC, as the of gets hot. On my UDS I dint have anything and it works fine.

PVC will melt. Black pipe works and you can adapt it to fit a nice cap to keep out rain and get some draft. The 1" usually works and gives enough draft, but doing the 2" makes sure you are set. It's best to restrict airflow at the inlet rather than the outlet so adjusting temps should be from the bottom.

You don't need one. I have used the original bung holes for years without issue. When it's really cold out I put a tea cup over the smaller hole and it holds in the heat a little more.

My theory is you need Equal to a little larget Exhaust than Intake.

Most have either 3 or 4 each 3/4" Intake Ports.

The 2 Inch Bung should be plenty. It is 3.14 Sq Inches.

A Weber Dome lid with ONLY 4 each 3/4" Holes is used every day with no issues, and the 4 each 3/4" holes equal only 1.77 Sq Inches. Less than the bung vent.

I would put a stack of some sort on the bung exhaust vent. The ones that look like a Diesel Tractor Exhaust look pretty good to me. A straight exhaust pipe with a sliding closer like on an Offset Smoker are also not bad.

Then with a straight piece of exhaust pipe, you can just drop a can over the top to close it off.

Whatever length you like. Like was said above just the open bung works fine.

I buy these for the UDS's that I build...4" diameter damper from KCK.com....The drums I get don't have bungs in the lids, these exhaust plenty.

Neat, I've seen them before
