My unit (9th Inf Div) retired their colors after leaving Vietnam. We had all of the ceremonies at Schofield. Two of our three Brigades were sent to Hawaii in August of 1969. The other Brigade was guys who wanted to stay in 'Nam, mostly "short" guys who wanted to get "early outs". I was not "short", so I went to Hawaii. We left the Mekong delta (Dong Tam), and I was at Schofield Barracks with the 25th Inf Div from August 19, 1969 until August, 1970. The Tsunami in 1970 hit Hawaii hard. It leveled a lot of Schofield, including our motor pool. Everybody said the only thing that was holding our motor pool together was "the termites were holding hands". I lived off post with my wife in Waipahu at the time, and had to hitch a ride home that day. I was driving home when a tree fell down in front of me. I started to back up, and a tree fell down behind me. I didn't need another hint, so I got out, left my car there, & thumbed it home!
