Been hearing so much about tri-tip roasts that I wanted to go out and try one. Problem is no one in this city ever heard of it and it seems that Costco may be the only retailer in my area that carries them and it is on a catch as catch can basis. That give me the blues.... :emoji_musical_score::emoji_microphone::emoji_guitar:

Sorry Bro! in SLC I can get them just about anywhere. Costco is hands down the most affordable. Random note on Costco in SLC - we have the biggest on in the USA here. the meat dept is off the rails insane! part of the meat dept is a walkin cooler with briskets, beef ribs and ever roast imaginable. its hard to use any self control.

Bummer, it's a nice cut. Hard to come by in my area too. Waiting for a sale, I can get porterhouse cheaper ( not that I dislike porterhouse ) ;)

Folks, Tri Tip is nice, but it's no porterhouse, ribeye, or prime rib. It's basically a fattier sirloin roast. I LOVE tri tip, but if I could get any of the three above as cheap as TT, TT would fall to fourth in a heartbeat.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to have some leftover grilled TT for lunch.

That is a shame JC.

I normally get my TT at Walmart.
I did a quick online search of all the Walmarts up your way... no joy. :emoji_disappointed:

We were at the store today and they had TT, which they generally always do. However, I refuse to pay 7.99/lb on a cut of meat that just a few years ago was 2.99/lb. Just like brisket and skirt steak, once a cheaper cut of meat gains a bit of fame... the prices get out of hand.

We have three Sams around here but only one regularly has TT. They were $4.67#. Then Angus went to $5.98#. In the last six months it’s now running $7.97#. Our local Publix just started selling tri tip.... $9.19#. Priced out and back to on sale top sirloin until it hopefully drops.

Amen brother.

JC, I buy my tri tip by the case from Gordon Food Service. Looks like there is one in GB. $4.99 per pound untrimmed is what I paid a few weeks ago. Ordered online and picked up at the store a few days later. A case is a lot, so have your freezer ready and if you can a vac sealer. I break the 5 roast packs and reseal individually.

I just did 2 on my pellet grill on Tuesday, awesome! And I have 2 curing right now for pastrami next weekend.

Good luck!

the easy way is buy some corned beef at your local grocery chain, soak it in water in the refer with a couple water changes (time recommendations vary - I go about 24 hours - to remove some salt.) Rub it with pastrami rub and smoke it up. these turn out pretty decent. there are threads on here with directions for corning beef...I have gone there...yet

Exactly!!!
If I could buy porterhouse, or ribeye for the same price as T.T. I'd never buy another T.T. Porterhouses and ribeye are by far my favorite steaks. Give me a 2 1/2-3'' thick cut of either and I'd be a happy man. Don't get me wrong T.T. are great but they ain't no P.H. or R.E. I love prime rib but for me it doesn't hold a candle to a nice thick P.H. or R.E. cooked over white hot Oak wood coals.

Thanks for that. I looked at GFS again and I missed that you could get the TT steaks. When I first looked, it only listed whole sirloin. I am going to have to get a box. :emoji_cat:
