I think that if you have the ability to carry all of those products then it would be a good thing. Good Luck.

Is there a way to do it where you are able to be the middle man and start the business with a small investemet and let someone else do the shipping and handling so you can get started before you start stocking stuff?

If not you seem to be able to use a lot of stuff in your caterin so maybe you could get your feet on the ground with items you could use then expand - just my .02 cents

If you have good access to the items and can carry them on a steady basis then I say sign me up

There are a few companies out there that offer items like those but if you think about it there really aren't that many which is a good thing. Not a lot of competition and specialty products with good deals and such would definitely give you a foot forward.
And a snazzy web page always helps.

Geeze Trav I'd talk to someone who is already in the business to see how deep the water is.

Then maybe give er a try. Might work for ya, I sure hope so. I'd be nice to see how it develops. Keep us in the loop if ya decide to go for it.

You could publish a catalogue ..... Travcoman's fixins for Ham. Or something like that.

Tough times and this makes it harder. I would say after 27 years in buisness for my self that a unique identity to catch the eye and set yourself apart from similar buisnesses is more important than ever. Most small buisnesses fail because they are under capitalized. Make sure that you go into this with eyes wide open and good luck.

Sometimes there is a reason things are hard to find. Not that many consumers buy them. Not trying to discourage just being realistic. I know a guy that sells nothing but hot sauces at flea markets and other events and does pretty well. He has a big company private label his stuff in addition to many others.

How big is the customer base for sausage making? I make sausage but I can't name another person I know that does.

Ever think about making your own seasoning (boudin) and sell it to businesses like Curleys and such. I owned a business for several years and it is not an easy task to get started and make it succesful especially right now in this economy. I am for sure not trying to kill a dream and I would buy some stuff from you but cover all the bases before you jump in with both feet! Good luck!!

Now....about buying some boudin seasoning from you??? See you already could have a sale!!!

Well Travcoman45, like anything, it could work, or it could fail. But one thing is for sure, you will never know unless you try. I'd say, if its something you think you would like to do, then go for it. One piece of advice I will give you that a good friend gave me when I started an elevator company years ago. A small business is like a newborn baby, you have got to feed and nurture it everyday, or it will die. Put me on the customer list when she takes off

Sounds good but most of the time somethings that soound good don't pan out but if youe serous about it Tip you could make a good start with alot of the folks from here alone. We will surely tell my friends but here is where i got the idea of making sausage and all my new freinds

Tough call nowdays, Tip...I'd have to agree with Scarbelly on this and play it a bit on the safe side by starting with what you can use on the side and expand as needed. The inventory costs and storage alone could put a guy in debt beyond recovery, if you go in too deep, too fast. Growing pains, as corporate company employees call it...the company tries to get too big too fast, and they end up folding when the the pressure is on if they don't have the momentum to push it all the way to the finish.

The thing about me is I'm pretty conservative, and I like to carefully weigh my options if time permits before I make a decision. That's not to say that it always works out in my favor, just how I try to make the best of things.

This could be one of those make ya or break ya situations, and the more you put into it will multiply the end result, whichever direction it takes...either it flies high and straight, or it crashes and burns. Like others have said, you won't know if you don't go for it...how deep you go is up to you.

Best of luck, and my best wishes to your family as well. I would like to hear another success story here, too, so keep us informed, please.

Eric

After being in business for over 25 years, I will tell you have plenty of backing to last thru the lean times, keep quality products at a fair price, have good customer skills and service and listen to your clients, all very important. I'll be waiting for a product list, count me in.
