Well, it was a balmy 33* here yesterday, and I wanted to experiment a little with the kettle. So with that being said I also wanted to try another fried appetizer without using any oil. So out comes the 26" kettle and the Vortex.

First I gotta get it fired up.

She's cruizing right along. Sorry about the blurry pic. I blame it on the camera, and not the PBR's

So here I started out with a block of Mozzarella:

...and slice it up into sticks:

dredge in some flour:

and onto a dip into the egg wash:

Then dried off with some seasoned breadcrumbs and put them into the freezer for 2 hours.

Some were complaining about being cold so I offered them a blanket of bacon:

The grill has a whole lot of real estate so why not smoke up some wings for supper. Sorry no shot of the cheese on the smoker. I was to busy playing with skidmark:

Skidmark waiting patiently: Are they done yet!!!

What a disaster: not to appealing to the eye, but tasted pretty good.

...but at least the wings came out good. So all was not lost.

All in all this was a failure, but I will attempt it again. The next time I won't be using the Vortex but will go with charcoal baskets instead. Way to much heat. BTW they did taste good both plain and dipped in pizza sause.

One must post up failures as well as successes I guess.

I think it all looks good . I know you're trying to get away from oil , but a sheet pan with non stick foil and just a small amount of oil drizzled on works pretty good .
Nice idea .

Thanks Chop, I use a small sheet of foil when I make blooming onions on the grill. I should have known better. I also use pam when making kettle fried chicken to crisp up the uncooked flour. Brain fart on my part. I wish you had reminded me before I fired up the grill. :emoji_laughing:

Great idea and thanks for sharing. Look tasty to me!

How long were the cheese sticks on? I’m assuming not long, since the vortex was cranking heat? I’m intrigued by the idea.

Thanks Richie, I know that saying all to well. The idea is one I'm not giving up on just yet. My next plan of attack is in the works.

Not long at all. Maybe 15 minutes. The Vortex was putting out way to much heat for this snack. Next time I'll dial it down a few degrees. Stay tuned.

Failure???
All Looks Mighty Tasty from the Den!!
Sorry I'm so late!!
Like.

Bear

Thanks Bear, for the kind words and like. This one did taste good but the presentation was a total failure. I really like mozzarella sticks and have picked up a couple of those copper sheets for the grill. I'm going to try this again at a lower grill temp on the copper sheets. At least the wings turned out good.

I was reading this again today , because I liked the idea with the cheese . Was wondering if toasting the bread crumbs in a dry skillet to give some color before putting on the cheese . Shorten time on the grill ?

That may work especially with the bacon wrapped sticks.

Thanks Chop.
