Wow! That's amazing, Bear. I grew up in Jersey in the 60's to the early 90's. The most snow I ever saw was 28" in 78. Drove in it, got stuck in it, hiked 5 miles, etc. That's with me for life. And that's nothing like what you just described. I can't imagine what that must've been like.

I Just remembered: One of our other Big Snows---Must have been about 1965, because My Best Friend "Hunky Jack" was giving me a ride home from school that day. He was old enough to drive & I wasn't---That's how I remember the year. We were in his 1959 Chevy Impala, and we were fish-tailing & swerving our way home, until we actually got about 100 yards from My Driveway. My Dad was outside, just finishing up cleaning the snow from his Driveway with his Bolens Tractor & Blower. He got up on the road, and cleared a 36" path for Jack's left tires, and on the way back a 36" path for the right tires. Then We could drive right to our Driveway, to park in the cleared parking area out back. Two other cars were already back there, from earlier people who couldn't make it to their homes. So other than My Dad's Chevy Pickup & his Chevy Station wagon, we also had a Corvette, an Old Studebaker, and Jack's '59 Impala spend the night at our house.
Jack spent the night, and the next day I walked about halfway to his house with him, as he lived about 7 miles from my house. One of the Drifts across the road, we encountered was so big, he walked around to the other side, and we couldn't see each other. He picked up his '59 Chevy a couple days later.

I'll never forget. My buddy and I got stuck, I was in a 74 Buick Lesabre. Hiked 5 miles , came upon 3 others stuck in an old Camaro, we helped get them unstuck, they gave us a ride to his house. As soon as we got into his house, his Father told us we had to go out with him to get his Mother and her coworkers, who were stuck at their work! This was at 11pm. LOL indeed.

LOL---Yup, Night-time always makes things twice as hard!!

Bear

Wish we could see those 4 old cars right now. That's a great story.

That 59 Impala was a Beauty.
His Mother also had the cheaper 59 BelAir.
And his Summer car was a 61 'Vette (LOL Power Glide).

Great Times we had back then!!

Power Glide in a 'Vette, truly LOL. That must've been standard issue, with TurboHydromatic 350 as the upgrade. The TH 350 trans first came out in 59 or 60 if I'm not mistaken.

Yup Power Glide:
That '61 was neat. I rode in it every day. Jack bought it used, as is.
It was a 283 punched out to 301.
Big Cam in it. Sounded neat when in gear with the brake on, at a light, when the idle got down real low.
Jack removed the fake clutch pedal the guy had put in it, but he left the fake tail pipe in it. It actually only had single exhaust.
It was a lot of fun riding around in it anyway.

When we went to Vietnam, Jack gave it to his Kid Sister, probably figuring he wouldn't be coming back. She still has it.

Bear

She still has it? What kind of shape is it? That's incredible. That's very touching he gave it to her. You must have had a blast in that thing. I've seen some older 'vettes with that fake clutch pedal.

Last I saw it--Looked like new---Probably still does.
I heard she turned down $45,000 for it.
After Vietnam, he got a 69 "Vette, and ended up killing himself, but they brought him back. He was drunk & hit a tree at about 120 MPH (uphill)---Half a mile from "The Brick Tavern", where he had just left.
Firemen didn't even try to get him out. A State Cop reached in & said he felt a couple of beats. His Mother got me in to see him 3 days later, by telling them I was his Brother.
His Liver was ruptured, Lungs were punctured in 4 places, Spleen was split in half, bone sticking out of his upper arm, bone sticking out of his leg, his left eye was up in his hair. 31 days later I took him out of there, with a cast on his arm & a cast on his leg, minus one Speen. Six months later he was playing Shortstop on my Beth Steel Softball team. He can see better with the eye that was once up in his hair than with the other one. They didn't get him for DWI, because all the surgeons in the ER were busy trying to save his life, instead of trying to find enough blood to test.
He's still around, but he does all his Beer Drinking at home.

WOW! That's one hell of a story. He's lucky for sure. Should use that story for new drivers. That almost 60 year old 'vette looks like new? If so, $45,000. is too low, glad they turned it down. It'll only continue to go up in value. I love classic American cars if you couldn't tell, lol.

Don't miss the ice and snow one bit in California. We just have our fires out here.

I don't think I'd like those fires too much either.
I know there was a big one about 70 miles NorthWest of here, many years ago, because when you drive through that area on Rt 80, all the trees in the forest are 6" thick or less. It goes for miles & miles, but nothing like CA gets.

My neighbors have a steel roof on the house with a 5:12 pitch. Couple of years she was outside with their American Lab, and the snow slid. Completely buried the dog. If she hadn't see it happen and managed to dig the dog out.........
Gary

Wow!! That's scary!! Good thing she saw it happen!
Poor Puppy!

Some of my neighbors have metal roofs and I see these curls all the time. We had our roof done a couple of years ago, and decided to go with traditional shingles. It has a twenty year warranty and I don't think I'll be alive or living here when the warranty expires. One of my neighbors who has a metal roof went on vacation last year only to come home to find out one of these curls broke a window in his living room. It was a mess that I'm glad I didn't have to clean up.

Chris

My Shingles are 25 year warranty, but we're already at 18 years.
I can't remember seeing many metal roofs on homes around here.---Mostly Pole Barns and Farm buildings. I never had that trouble with Cheese curls.

That's pretty cool to look at, never seen anything like it. Here in SC, we hardly ever get any snow, much less anything like like that. Not sure if my candy behind could tolerate it.

Nowadays they sell really good clothes for cold weather.
When I was a kid, they didn't have real good warm clothes that I could afford.
For Deer Hunting, I used to wear this old "Swedish Army Trench Coat", with a real high collar, that my Dad brought home from WW2. My Mother had sewed and Army Blanket inside for extra warmth. It was pretty warm, but it weighed a Ton!!! My feet were always cold in the woods.
My Bare hands were cold too, because I never handled a weapon with gloves on.

Couple years ago we had friends over for new years, he happened to bring his small cannon along... packed properly it did a very sufficient job of removing snow off shed roof!

Ryan

Thank You Ryan!!
I remember them using a Canon on "High Mountain Rangers" starring Robert Conrad & his 2 sons, on TV years ago. They used it for Avalanche prevention.
And Thanks for the Like.
