Snow Curl--Big One!

For those who never saw one of these:

The pics below are of a huge "Snow Curl" that built up off the length of Bear Jr's Pole Barn Shop.
It was on the side of the Shop pointing toward my house.
The Pole Barn is 60' X 100', and the curl was built up on the North Side of one of the 100' Lengths. It was about 6' to 8' from top to bottom.
He was a little concerned about what would happen to his building when it finally drops, but I told him it will just drop straight down "Gravity", and will do no harm to his building.
So last night at exactly 9:43PM it dropped. I was watching TV in my living room, and I heard a Big"Whoooph"!!!
It was very loud for me to be able to hear it, being 80% Deaf, and through my solid wood walls @ about 150 yards away, with my TV on.
I couldn't see it in the dark, and wasn't going out to look, so I waited until I talked to Bear Jr in the morning.
This morning Bear Jr said it was still there when he came in & drove by it last night, and it wasn't there when he walked Diesel, at 10:30.
I told him I heard it drop @ 9:43. He said "That must have been it!!"

He gets them on that roof every year, but this was the first time it was 100' long when it finally dropped, and all in one piece!

that's a big one bear, my garage is 70ft long but i don't think i ever had a curl the whole length.

That's crazy. I have a 36x60 Shop and when the snow starts sliding off that, I sure as hell wouldn't want to be under it. I keep close eye on it when I'm in and out the walk-in door

Kinda cool looking! Never seen one that long before either. Good thing it didn't fall on anything or anyone!

Installing cleats on the roof close to the bearing wall stops this. It stops the roof from sheeting off the snow load all at once. Forces it to melt off.

I'd be more concerned if it didn't drop.
We lost a lot of buildings around here the previous 2 winters from snow load.

My brother lives in Idaho. All buildings have steel roofs so the snow will slide. Someone is injured every year for being in the wrong place.

That is ... something. I'm trying to figure out how they got a groomer up there.

Did anyone else notice the resemblance to a roller coaster?

That was one of the deciding factors when I built our 60 x 40 shop... went with a company from Minnesota because of their roof design... they have never had a roof fail due to snow loads.

When Bear Jr was using that Pole Barn for his Tower Shop, he had 13 guys working for him, and that's a lot of parking needed. He told them all to not park under the eaves. One of the Climbers parked his Toyota Pick-up right up against the wall, and when a big section came down, it landed right square in the middle of his hood.
You could see the complete outline of the air cleaner in the smashed hood.

Another time, one of the Climbers forgot his harness, so he stopped about 10' from the building, leaving his door wide open, to just run in & back out. While he was inside, a big section came down, and when it hit the ground it exploded toward the Tower Truck, and went right in the open door, completely filling the inside of the truck & fully covering the guy in the passenger side. This one was funny!

A few years ago he moved his main Tower business to a bigger building, about 10 miles from here, and the Pole Barn is now combination Storage, and his "Rustic Legends Woodworx" shop.

Didn't want roof to cave in. Bad is when you pull it all off the garage is you need to blow that again.
