Our good member DaveOmak (Rip) was a wizard at math and pit building as well as many other things. One thing he left this forum with was a pit building calculator. Comprised by himself and many others.

This is the best guide/calculator that I know of to give build answers based off any build size. These are based on reverse flow horizontal pits but the numbers for volumes are always the same.

I had a similar situation and ended up calling the trusted chimney and fireplace experts in Fort Worth, and they handled the mess and safety checks way better than I could’ve on my own. Their techs were super clean and didn’t rush anything. The pricing was chill too, especially with their discounts. If your fireplace’s acting up, they’re worth a shot.
