Hey all, I like to reverse sear my steaks and prime rib. Currently I smoke them low on my reqtec and then I have my pit boss cranked to 500 with open flame. I think that putting flame on them adds great flavor but it seems like a massive waste of pellets to crank the pb for just two minutes of searing. Any equipment ideas that I could use for the searing? I am looking specifically for something that can get flame directly on the meat.

Beings OP is specifically looking for direct flame I would say a propane torch such as Su-V-Gun or similar or a chimney of charcoal ripping hot with a grate would be the best options. Not sure how much pellets you are going through currently for your couple minutes of use but propane and especially charcoal isn't free. Biggest problem I have had doing the charcoal in a chimney method is now I got a bunch of nice charcoal that basically goes to waste.
Personally I have gone more to using the cast iron pan with a little oil, butter or other fat you choose like beef tallow. I think I am actually getting a better sear and flavor especially when I use butter.

If you're not to worried about money one of the best searing gassers out there is a Weber Q.My little 1000 already got hot enough as is but once I added GrillGrates®️ it gets beyond hot and same with my full size Spirit.

nothing beats screaming cast iron.
Tasty but different than live fire. I call it "bistro".

Reminded me... You sometimes can replace an existing burner with a sear burner to your gasser.

Stoke that baby with a little air blower and you got yourself a jet burner.
Had a stump from a tree we cut down at deer camp . Rotted out in the middle .
Good size , so I took it and started a fire in the middle . It had a knot hole in the side , that acted like an air intake .
That thing was like a oxy / acetylene torch . No air draw from the bottom , just that side .
It was just like a torch . Burned a long time too .
