That is looking really really nice (text book!!).

Just a thought do you have any plans to put some angle or other form of bracing on the FB door to minimize warping? The overlap is probably enough but I thought I would at least give you something to think about......LOL
Thanks man!

I had thought of it some time back, then got preoccupied with other steps And never got back around to it. Thanks for the reminder! I have the extra material to do it, so I wouldn’t be out anything but time. Anything that would help guard against heat warping is a good thing!

It's been a minute since I updated this build. I had to delay my smoker build for a while, because of a couple of other projects that took precedence - the biggest of which is, the missus decided she wanted our bathrooms remodeled...so I spent several weeks working on that project.

Now that the bathrooms are finished, I'm back in the shop trying to wrap up this build. Lots of little things left to complete, but I feel like I'm in the home stretch.

So I got the firebox assembly all complete and ready to weld on to the cook chamber. Welded hinges and a toggle latch...then got the FB shimmed up level and plumb in preparation for welding it on.

Level, plumb, and clamped in place. Time to start welding.

FB all welded out! Everything is still level and plumb.

I also fabricated a cool-touch handle for the FB door, and got it welded on.

After I got the FB all welded out, I decided to add some 1/4" thick tabs at the bottom, for extra bracing.

Got the casters mounted up again. It's starting to look like a smoker...

So that's where I am currently. Next, I'm probably gonna start fabricating some cooking racks, and a coal rack or basket of some kind for the FB. I still have to finish the smoke stack, and mount the main CC door to hinges. I'm also probably gonna fabricate a pull handle of some kind for the left end of the CC. Like I said, lots of little jobs left to do, but I'm getting close!

Thanks for checking it out!

Nice build you have going. I built one years back. I am about to start another build. What size DB did you go with? I am going to run a 24” x 24” FB on my 24”x 46” tank. Keep up the solid work.

Thanks for the kind words! It’s coming along slowly.

Not sure what “DB“ is? If you meant to type FB, my firebox is 22x18. If DB means something else, I’m sorry…please clarify.

Yea I meant FB, are you going to make it 1 rack or 2?

There'll be 2 cooking racks in the chamber - in fact, I'm gonna work on fabricating and installing the upper rack today. The lower main rack if finished.

Appreciate all the the positive feedback guys!

This is as good a time as any for a quick update. I’ve got the cooking racks complete.

Worked on the lower, main cooking rack first. Started by laying out the rails and making sure they’re square and level...then getting them welding in place.

Next I fabricated the lower main rack - in 2 pieces. and checked the fit.

Initially, my plan was to have the lower rack slide out...but because I wanted to be able to use the extra space that goes all the way to the right end-plate, I changed my mind. I built it in 2 pieces, so it's removable...but not slide-out.

Then I got the expanded metal cut and spot-welded to the rack frames.

Main rack is roughly 35" x 23".

The upper rack does slide out. It took me a little time to figure out how to get the runners level and square and welded in place...then got the rack framed and expanded metal spot welded on.

I wanted a 7" clearance between the bottom and top racks...so you could put large pork butts or even whole chickens on the bottom, and still have room for briskets or ribs on top.

Top rack is roughly 32"x 18".

As I said in the last update, it's mostly just small but time-consuming jobs left. Next up, I'll probably build a coal rack for the FB. Also thinking about an ash pan.

Before I get the smoke stack attached, while I can still flip this heavy mother upside down, I think I'll do the paint prep and get the belly and some of the bottom parts painted while they're easier to reach.

Then the smoke stack, a log/storage rack in the bottom of the cart, and fabricate some handles for the sliding dampers on the FB. Still want to fabricate a pull handle on the right end of the cook chamber...and still have to weld hinges on the main door and get that mounted. By that time, it'll be close enough to build a fire in it!

At this point everything is going slow...but it shouldn't be long now!

Thanks for checking in!!

Red... this thing is looking awesome... Excellent craftsmanship...

If I may suggest (I may have already)... For the top rack... The short pieces of angle you have to keep the rack from tipping down when pulled out... cut those down to only about 1/2''- 3/4'' long instead of the 2''-3'' long that they are now... Then weld short tabs sticking up on the back of the top rack to where they will hit the angle... this will be a stop from pulling it all the way out and it landing on the ground.... Now grind off the top of that tab a little at a time until you get it just right so when you lift the front of the rack up at an angle the little stop tab will then slide under the1/2''- 3/4'' long piece of angle iron and the rack will then come all the way out...

It's just much easier when you open the door and your eyes get full of smoke and heat and can't see... You can just pull the rack out until it stops... no need to try and hold all the weight of the meat/rack up and try to watch it on where to stop so it don't come to far and fall out...

Hopefully your not confused... I did this on both my racks in the Tractor

That’s a good idea Keith. Having a stop on that pull-out rack is a no-brainer now that I think about it! Last thing anyone wants to do is pull a rack out too far and dump a couple hundred dollars worth of meat on the ground!

Thanks again for the tip Keith!
