Question for GOSM owners.....

I'm trying to find out a safe way to mod a GOSM to run off of natural gas. In this thread: http://www.smokingmeatforums.com/for...8716#post98716 Walking Dude mentioned that when he converts dryers from LP to NG and back that all it takes is to change out the orifice. Would one of you GOSM owners be so kind as to take a look at the burner assembly on your GOSM and let me know if the orifice can be swapped out?

Now that I think of it, I am remembering putting my GOSM together. I think it's all one piece from the fitting that screws on to the propane tank through the burner. I don't remember any piece that could be swapped out. I would suggest that you download the owners manual for the big block you are interested in and look through it. That may tell you what you want to know.

FWIW - For the price you talked about in your other thread, I would get it and use propane.

I did give a look through the manual. From the looks of it, the whole burner system comes as one assembly. Now if that means it's all one piece, or just pre-assembled I couldn't tell from the drawings.

Either Lowes or Home Depot has a converson kit in the grill section (Darned if I can remember which) I think it was like $38 or something close. I also think it was for a weber grill but it should still work. I've looked at it all summer but don't want to hire a plumber to run the gas outside.


I'm leaning toward Lowes ...

wookie if nothing else.........take the hose assembly into a appliance repair store........they can drill out that hole..........its not that hard to do, its brass.........piece of pie.......or is that easy as cake.......summin like that.......LOLOL

Dude you gotta have a licence to do gas in CT. I used to be an electrician not a plumber. I could get in big trouble if the Town caught me. AND trust me I'd get caught - they keep checking to make sure my BBQ shelter is not permenent or I haven't started the addition they haven't approved in 4 years!

Ican't wait to retire and leave this town!

Heya, Wookie!

Good to see you have found the SMF family!

Seems to me that a while back the same question came up. And the cause of the question was a fear of running out of gas.

First of all, as pointed out, you will have to bear the cost of a licensed plumber to hook up the unit to your house gas. Failure to do so can negate your homeowner's policy. Not a good thing because you will not find out till it is too late. And it can be done by a knowledgeable person. Once the orifice is altered it must be replaced to return to propane.

Considering the expense, the fact that the unit will have to stay put and cannot be taken to camp for a bit I would opt to buy an extra gas cylinder or two and be sure of a solid supply of propane and the freedom to take that puppy to a cook off or to deer camp if you so desire.

I have the GOSM Big Block and love it! There are two forty pound tanks dedicated to that puppy and I have several other twenty and thirty pounders I use for grilling a a "few other purposes". Always "Got Gas!"

Good point Monty I thought about the insurance thing and didn't mention it.

Dude this state is weird you can wire your own house (not anyone elses mostly the insurance problem) licenced or not but you can't do gas. Although I do know people that do I won't.

In Florida, DIY gas mods are extremely illegal. The regulator needs to be changed-out too because the BTU content of the gas is so drastically different. The attachment is permanent to the house, so that's a turn-off to me. I bet I get almost 40 hours of fun out of a 20-pounder of LP. I have three 20's for my GOSM and grill. Seems pretty cost-efficient to me the way it is.

I think I might pick up the Lowe's/HD conversion kit and just see if it works. If it doesn't fit...I'll just bring it back.

The reason I'm looking for the NG option isn't really a fear of running out of LP. I already keep two LP tanks on hand for the homebrewing hobby. It's just convenience and economy for me. NG is cheaper, and I already have it plumbed to the patio outside. No insurance or plumber hassles with the hook-up there. Plus having one less appliance running on LP will mean less running out to get the tanks filled. I've already got my gas grill and two turkey fryer for home brewing chewing up the LP. Less hassle of driving around there.

I'm also now shying away from permanently modifiying the orafice for portability reasons. It'll be nice to run the GOSM off of NG at home, but for tailgaiting and camping and such, just take the conversion kit off, put the LP parts back on and she's ready to travel. Course they do make a dual-fuel afterburner kit, with that I wouldn't even have to swap anything out. Hmmmm.

Bottom line, it's a convienence, not a necessity. LP or NG I'm still going to buy a smoker and make some damn fine q. We just poured a new patio last week and it's begging for it!

Congrats on the new patio! Just keep more than one bottle of gas. I only have two small 20 lbers and I've never run out of gas. If one gets empty just switch them out and re-fill the other.

I don't have the GOSM I have a similar smoker the Camp Chef Smoke Vault it's a tad bigger than the GOSM Big Block and I get between 40 to 53 hours per tank depending on how cold it is outside.

Has anyone found a place to buy the replacement orafice? it does screw out and very easily replaced...I just cant fine a place to buy one. Lowes Natural Gas conversion kit comes with some but they are one size too big...

Goto yer local furnace or appliance guy, outer be able ta fix ya right up, they do them conversions all the time.
