Protecting the probes...

I will have a new Maverick 733 delivered today, and want to know the best way to protect the probes.  My 732's stopped working, so I upgraded the unit, too.  But, I want them to last much longer this time around.  $20 for a new probe is a lot of meat that can be smoked, no? ;)

If you're talking about the joint where the cable enters the probe and sealing it from water or condensation, then I'd use one of the Permatex RTV silicones from any auto parts store.  I got the Ultra copper 700*F.  You can smear it into the braid of the cable a couple inches down from the joint and over the probe/cable joint.   I did it right after the ice water/boiling water test.  I got mine through Amazon.  Sets completely and flexible in 24hrs.  I have never wound up the cables since I opened the box.  I just let them hang straight to keep out the kinks and coil memory.  I just don't want to handle them a lot and coil/uncoil every smoke.  Maybe that will help make them last longer.

All I have ever done is to wrap some aluminum foil around the wires to protect a tad from my lid closing.  Probably even that was not necessary?

I had one bad probe early on and got a replacement from:

My dad just buy spares to have on hand. He looks at as one of those things that's just going to happen so be prepared.

I guess I'm lucky. I've never had a probe go bad on my 732 (now 6yrs old) or my iGrill 1 or iGrill 2. I've read all the fixes but haven't ever needed them. 4-6 uses a week and no problems.
