I grew up in "pop" areas until high school when we moved to a "soda" area. Now I just call it by the brand that I like and avoid the confusion which apparently wouldn't work well for me in TX if I wanted a Coke. lol

I say pop mainly but sometimes  soda. This is funny. I use to travel the USA for work and it blew my mind the first couple of times down south when I would order a pop or soda and they would just look at me and not have a clue what I was talking about. Then I would just say  "I want a Coke". Then they would ask "What kind of Coke?" It took me a while to figure out what the heck was going on. Then I realized that they call it coke instead of pop or soda.

It's just funny saying "I want a Coke". "What kind of Coke?" "A Coke, Coke" or "Mountain Dew Coke" Funny stuff.

Originally from Upstate NY, I called it Soda in reference to the Soda Machine we had in the front of the store dispensing a new fangled Pepsi soda bottle.  My dad called it Pop as it all fizzed, regardless of brand.  He'd yell at me because I would leave all my half-empty bottles all over the store and holler, "Git Yer Pops OUTTA HERE!" and the other employees all kidded me, "Hey Pops.. git yer Pops OUTTA HERE!" and all laughed about it - that's where the name came from!

I had the same experience as Ross - I finally just said - I want a diet coke and then would still get asked if I wanted Pepsi or Coke

Where and when I grew up it was pop.  Later, and in a different location, it became soda.  Throw in soda pop, and you can give an old man a headache?

Now I just call it a brew?

Good luck and good smoking.

I'm from Ohio and always called it pop then, and still do now. The guys here in Florida laugh when I say it, they call it soda.

If I order at a fast food place or restaurant I order it with the brand name I want,,, if a friend stops by I ask " Do you want a beer?,,,,,, pop?,,,,,,,water?,,,,,,,"

Thats the way in TN. You want a coke? What kind? I grew up in OK and TX and always called it pop then but now I drink coke. What kind? Coke!

NJ and PA it is Soda but Coke can refer to any Cola and 7up any Lemon Lime Soda...JJ

A very interesting thread?

We are addressing regional differences.

Also, we are addressing generational differences.

Keep it coming folks!  We can learn a lot here?

How about Coke? Pepsi? Or Royal Crown Cola?

Which did you buy?  Was it because of price?  Was it because of the price of the larger bottle?

Do you even remember when it came in a bottle? (I dare not ask if any old farts here had bottle cap collections)

Did the filling station let you take the bottle with you? (the bottles were worth 2 cents. Or do you remember?)

Then again, do you know what a "filling station" was?

OMG, an old man is digressing again!

Good luck and good smoking.

awesome topic here! In my area of Wisconsin it's always been pop, but I've been on both sides of the confusion here! I was working at a restaurant and had a guy with a southern accent ask for a coke, so I got him a coke...he gave me a funny look and said "this all ya have?" I said "well...we have diet?" turns out he wanted a sprite haha. Also I was at a movie theater in Philadelphia and asked for a small pop, the girl at the counter looked at me and said "popcorn??" and after a little bit we got on the same page, but she had never heard of pop before. It's interesting how different things are in different areas of the same country!
