Wasn't sure where to put this...but it was a kind of 'other build' so here it is.

I went dumpster diving the other day and found an old cast iron griddle plate from a gas grill. I thought I could clean it up and use it on top of my Weber. Whilst cleaning it up I thought it would be good to christen it with some smash burgers. My boy really loves making them and every time he does, I think we should really get a burger press - usually as we are trying to separate the ground beef from the slots in a spatula!! I had some scrap steel off cuts and cleaned a piece up, the I wasn't sure about how to make a handle, but then it hit me - I'm using some horse shoes from my wife's horse as lid stops and handle components on my smoker build, so I should continue the theme. I have to say, I was pretty happy with the end results.

That's using some creative ingenuity sir! I like the burger press idea so much that I may have to try something similar. I just happen to have a bin full of scrap plate that's looking for a good use!

That looks like a great setup. The horseshoe press is amazing.
Thank you - it was good fun to make - I really want a plasma cutter so I can make some round ones too. I've been making a few things with horse shoes lately, some trivets and also some with legs that you can set a pan or kettle on in the embers of a camp fire. I have a good supply of them so I'm trying to use them in as many ways as I can.

I see you have a trash can tandoor - you're a man after my own heart, I also have one and absolutely love cooking with it.

Thank you Red, I'm brand new to the metalworking/fabrication malarkey and these little projects really help with my confidence.

Please share any pics of your press as and when you make it - I'd really like to see it.

Nice find and burger press!
I've found 2 MES 30 in the past and both are still in use. Just needed a good cleaning.

Lucky you!! I'm in the UK and generally smokers are few and far between - let alone dumped ones that are reuseable - that must be a really satisfying find when you know you have the ability/skill to get them up to scratch again.

I was thinking the same thing as I was reading...

Wet Spaniel Wet Spaniel ... Thanks for the idea ... As I too always told myself "I need to make one" when using a heavy duty solid spatula... Problem with it it's not wide enough.. I have to "smash" twice on one burger... Wax paper would have been your best friend with the slotted spatula.. As well as with the new press ...

Re purposing scraps is fun.
I'll search for the photos of the horse shoe crabs my buddy welded up.
Talk to your ferrier about shaping the hoof to take out the trailing edge wear. Appears the toe side is not cut down enough.
