I have an Auber PID WSD 1500 H-W and was wondering what input to adjust to make it not start “feathering “ back the element until it gets closer to Setpoint?

Is your temp staying below the setpoint? I'm far from an expert but have picked up on a few of their quirks not that I have many solutions but I may be able to help. A big issue is that we lose heat so fast through venting.

Olaf, thanks for the reply. Once it gets to setpoint it holds great, but for instance, when I was smoking sausage Tuesday it was moving from 155 to 165 and was at 20% to 70% most of the time. It took over half an hour to get to 165. I just think it would be at 100% output until it got closer to setpoint. Maybe a 10 degree change in setpoint isn’t enough to make it think it needs to use 100% output?
It will go from 110 to 130 in just a few minutes.

Here are my P I D settings if it helps

Lower the P down to 3 keep the cycle time at 2 sec from what I've read that should help I'm trying to work out issues with mine. Increasing your derivative may also help.

Yeah I know I'm working through mine same issue just I have no time

Thanks Olaf. I’ll change it and check it out on my next days off. I’m sure I can find something to throw in there!!!
12 lbs of snack sticks in now and it’s on its last step and almost to temp on the sticks.

Awesome I did snack sticks a couple weeks ago big hit at work now I need to make more. I had been following your smoker build looks nice. I just ran mine at similar settings and it worked out good. My smoker is smaller but went from 44 to 160 in 25 minutes it began to cycle got to 165 at 29 minutes went as high as 171 be for drifting back down. By lowering the P value it starts to act more like a straight on off control. I don't have time to see how acts over time good luck

Thanks Olaf, it’s been a lot of work but I’ve enjoyed it!!
My sausage smokes take about 6 hours so run time isn’t an issue. It just happened at a point where I was almost done ( the last step). I’m going to try changing it ASAP. I still have some deer left I could grind up but I need more sausage like I need a hole in my foot. I guess I better get to eating !!!
And like your work, everyone likes it when I bring sausage.

I'm not at home so can't check my notes but maybe chopsaw chopsaw or tallbm tallbm will check in to help out. They both helped me out alot when I first got mine.

I think it was tallbm had mentioned something about getting drunk and reading the instructions upside down to help make them make sense...I agreed! But they will be able to help you out

Not sure if this will help you with the issue your having:

I set my temp on my Omron E5 to read ~10 degrees over the desired temp depending on the size of the food load. What I'm looking for is after opening the door and loading the food I want the smoker temp to fall close to my desired cook temp. I then adjust the Omron down to the desired cook setpoint.

I did this initially because I didn't want the element to glow super red hot right after I put the food in.

You can raise your proportional gain (P) or lower the integral gain (I) to get turn on and off closer to setpoint. Over shoot may get more pronounced. You could also try lowering your Derivative (D) time.

Not sure what smoker you have . Maybe I missed it . Here's some good info on an Auber used with an MES . I talk bout how I set mine up with an MES 30 starting with post 9 and 13 .

This can be confusing . To " raise " proportional gain , you would lower the value of P .

It depends if P is referring to the error gain or if it is being expressed as a function of time.

Generally, I have found that P is straight error gain and I is usually expressed in time.

or... maybe I missed your point entirely.... :emoji_anguished::emoji_sunglasses:

Not confusing for me , just saying for someone trying to set up an Auber controller on a electric smoker . To increase gain getting to set temp you would lower the value of P .

Roger that... I was not aware that the Auber controller went off timing for Proportional gain. In that case, yes, lower gain setting gives more proportional gain.

My PID controller works the same way.

Thanks for the clarification.

Thanks for the tips guys!!
I’m going to try lowering the P from 7 to 2
I did try running auto tune and it was a mess.
My trend lines went from nice and straight with maybe a 1 degree swing to all wavy.
I deal with control valves on a DCS every day, you’d think this wouldn’t be difficult for me but here we are.

My smoker is one I built so I’m sure there is going to be some bumps in the road at first.
I sure appreciate the tips though. From all y’all.
