So I bought an Auber WS 1211H PID to use with a basic Cuisinart analog smoker. Aubers customer service said all I have to do is set the dial on my smoker to high, plug smoker into back of PID then plug controller into wall outlet. Did that and nothing. I changed the PID to single step mode to just hold at one temperature and it's not sending power to the heating element at all. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong? Thanks.

You didn't mention the temp sensor . Assuming you have that hooked up .

You have power at the receptacle . Have to start with the obvious .

Make sure the smoker is working without the Auber .

Then ,
Do those 1211 have two outlets on them ? One for the smoker element, and one for a smoke generator ?

If so make sure you have the smoker plugged into the correct one .

What does the display on the Auber say ?

My first thought also.

I have the 1211.Single outlet and single temp probe.

Yes temp probe is plugged into controller and sensosor is in the smoker. The smoker runs fine on its own. Seasoned it yesterday. Trying to rune auto tune on PID now....

More than likely you're going to have to bypass the stock controller.Shouldn't be to hard to rewire it to make that happen.

I think dr k dr k may have nailed it.

Just looked up the OP's smoker and it does indeed have a 1500 watt element.

This is probably my issue, even though Auber customer service said the PID would work if I didn't have to take the smoker temp too high. But it won't even start the element heating. Time to send the PID back.....

It should heat some if the element is good when the lugs to the 1,500 watt element are disconnected and reads 9.6 ohms with 120vac. The WS-1510ELPM Auber is 15 amp 1,800 watts many here use for the Mes 40 1,200 watt element that would handle your element. This controller can be on indefinitely with a 1,200 watt element without cycling or reducing output from 100% for heat concerns of damaging the SSR or the PID. That makes it perfect for the Mes 40 since we are using 2/3 of the rating. I'm surprised that Auber sold you the model you have, knowing it's for a 1,500 watt element. I searched this info below.

No, a 1400W controller will not effectively heat a 1500W appliance, as the controller simply doesn't have enough power to fully activate the 1500W appliance, resulting in either significantly reduced heat output or potential damage to the controller due to overworking.
  • Power limitations:
A controller is designed to manage the power supplied to an appliance, and if the controller's wattage is lower than the appliance's, it cannot deliver the full power needed for proper operation.
  • Potential issues:
Trying to use a 1400W controller with a 1500W appliance might lead to:
    • Reduced heat output: The appliance will not reach its full heating capacity.
    • Overheating controller: The controller could overheat due to attempting to deliver more power than it is designed for.
    • Component damage: In extreme cases, the controller or appliance could be damaged

I put that same analog 1500 watt element in a 22 " kettle . Got around to testing it a couple weeks ago . Plugged it into my 1510 and did a rack of spares . Ran 275 and stayed there for 5 hours .

I also ran it empty at 350 for 2 1/2 hours as an initial test .

I remember awhile ago you mentioned you were going to do this.
