Not having a man in the house, I bit the bullet and bought a new Camp Chef Smoke Vault in the 24 inch wide model yesterday at Sportsman's Warehouse for $250 after researching online and reading for well over a year.

In the meantime, I used my conventional gas grill as a makeshift smoker with mixed results.

Are wood chunks ok for this smoker? I started using chunks because they last longer than the chips.

Just stopped writing this long enough to go start the Smoke Vault on it's break-in smoke-in.

I constantly battled blazing wood flames with a water sprayer before with that gas grill and I think that problem is over with this smoker.

I have a full rack of ribs waiting in the fridge to go into the smoker after the break-in is finished.

Not sure how long to smoke it though...

PS: not looking good using wood chunks :( the chips worked fine and the chunks have barely a wisp of smoke from the bottom of them.

and I just bought two big bags of chunks. Looks like now I have to go buy chips. Being a newbie is not fun but that's life :)

Yes, newbies have a kinship shared and the Smoke Vault to boot.

Perhaps we can talk the management into creating a Smoke Vault Group. The Smoke Vault hasn't been around as long as the other brands which means the major following is with a couple of the other vertical propane smokers.

On the size, 18 vs 24, I really want to smoke full sized rib racks and briskets, so for me it was worth the extra dinero :-)

I also love Tex-Mex, btw.

Hello Kitty and Welcome to SMF! It's great to have another Lady Smoker here!!! I'm sorry to be a bit late on welcoming you...been a bit out of the loop due to raging wildfires.

I have an MES 40 but I'm looking at either the Masterbuilt Propane Wide Body or the Smoke Vault 24. I'll definitely be keeping an eye on your posts to help me with my decision.

Again, welcome to SMF!
