Hi my name is kalin I'm joining the website to hope I can get help with my smoker build and to get a little knowledge on smoking looking forward to seeing everyone's post. Little about myself I'm a permanently disabled veteran I don't do much during the day so I'm using my time to get a hobby. If anyone with some knowledge reads this I have questions right off the bat. First one being is it smart or a waste if time to use a smoke generator in my smoker. I really don't have any plans to cold smoke anything but with an old fridge I worry about opening the door and losing all the heat when adding wood chips. Second question when cooking ribs do you need a mop again i worry about losing to much heat. Thanks to anyone that reapons back to me and just a heads up I'm looking for cheap cheap cheap ways to solve thes problems due to I have a limited income.

Thanks

Welcome Kalin to SMF. The best smoking forum around, Also thx. for your service, Although I am a Canuck I appreciate all the time our service persons commit to our countries.

As for the people and knowledge here it is great. I am just going to order the  A-MAZE-N tray and pellet tube for my smoker I am building. I think its a good product that set you up for good smoke flavor in your smoking adventures. As for the ribs there are a lot of different opinions and styles, I will mop a few times depending on the ribs we are doing, With opening smoker it just adds more time to cook. We also do dry ribs a lot and yes I put a water bowl in smoker where others do not. Experiment and ask lots of questions, Cruise the forums and see what people are doing.

What will you be using for a heat source.....electric probably? It will take some time to recover when opening the door. That said, for ribs, you can do most of them without time. Some swear by mopping, but I have made killer ribs, and I have never mopped a rib one time. You could make great ribs by smoking them for a few hours in the smoker, and then finish the rest in your oven or your grill. You could use the fridge unit for smoking and when you have the smoke flavor you want, use the oven or grill to finish to temp. My two cents from a fellow Wisconsinite. Welcome to the forum, thanks for your service, and it is great to have another Wisconsin friend on the site. Go Pack Go!!!

Thanks bladeguy I've smoked ribs then move them to the oven before I use to be able to make killer ribs but I had a smoker that went out on me and when I got a new one I couldn't get the same rib with the new smoker I think it doesn't recover heat fast enough. That's why I'm building my one smoker. As for heating element I'm leaning toward electric cause I want to find someone that could maybe help me out with the electrical so I can get everything linked together so heating element shut off and turns on automatically. Yes hoping packers do well this tomorrow love living in a city that has my favorite NFL team.

So you are in the Green Bay area, I'm about two hours west of you. Have fun with the smoker project! I would think recovery when opening the door wouldn't be too bad once the unit is warmed up? Most of the heat loss is air, but the fridge being well insulated should hold the heat to recover quickly I would think. I can't help with electrical......if my dad was still alive, he could have. Electrician for 40 plus years.

Good afternoon and welcome to the forum from a pretty nice day here in East Texas, and the best site on the web. Lots of          great people with tons of information on just about everything.

Yes I'm from Green Bay and I guess I've never thought about how well insulated the fridge is and will help protect from heat loss. The electrical is what I'm most worried about my wife told me I can't burn down the house. So I guess that means I better get it right or have a fire extinguisher close by.
