Hi guys and gals. Just joined the forum to learn about smoking. I’m currently stationed in Hawai‘i. I grew up in Ohio. Been “smoking” ribs and pork with my charcoal grill set up like a smoker. And now I’m looking for an actual smoker. So I figured I’d come here to learn about them. Mainly looking for a easy beginner one. Looking for pros and cons of electric vs wood or charcoal. Any input you guys have feel free to send this way.

Aloha Brian and welcome.I will preface the polarized opinions you're probably going to get by saying if you're used to charcoal and the flavor it imparts then stick with it.
Thank you for your service.

Aloha!

I lived in Waimea on the Big Island.

Number one recommendation, find yourself some Kiawe wood. It is great for smoking and runs rampant all over the islands!

Look into the Weber Smokey Mountain Smokers (WSM's). They are a great starter charcoal smoker. Easy to run and efficient on fuel. There is a ton of information on them here.

Look at this thread and you will see many cooks that I have done on my homemade Mini-WSM's and my store bought WSM'S.

Good morning and welcome to the forum from a cool, foggy and damp day here in East Texas, and the best site on the web. Lots of great people with tons of information on just about everything.
