I was seasoning my new smoker/grill and the paint on the bottom of the smoke box flaked off. Is this normal? Do I need to do anything to the exposed metal?

Welcome from SC. It's good to have you here. All I do is wire brush the FB and give it a couple of coats of high temp paint.
