I bought a pull behind smoker and I need to give it some attention. What do you all recommend to remove the rust on the inside of the smoker and especially the grates. And better yet to keep it off.

Also is there anything I can do to season the inside of the smoker.

Thanks in advance.

Thanks in advance.

Sandblasting should remove the rust. To prevent it? Wouldn't have a clue other than getting the outside parkerized. Quite expensive I'm sure and might not hold up to the heat.

I would sand blast and then use a high temp paint on the exterior. On the inside, I would eason with a high temp cooking oil and then just keep using the same oil between cooks to prevent interior rusting. The other thing I would recommend is doing a lot of cooks and post pictures as you go so we can enjoy the journey.

If it were my smoker I would just buy a couple 3 or 4 inch medium cup wire wheels, put one on a beefy 1/2" drill with a side handle and just go to town on all the rust, it will take it right off, then wash everything good with a scrubby and dish soap and rinse really good. Then put it back together and fire it up to dry it up really good. When the fire is out just hose every square inch of it with PAM original canola spray.
Then fire it up again to dry it, this will start your seasoning.
Then just maintain a coat of PAM on it and you will be good.
I swear by PAM, it's your smokers best friend, keep a coat on anything that looks dry, inside and out and it will never rust again.
