I was given an old family recipe which only contains the ingredients. Any suggestions on how to try and make this. all help will be greatly appreciated.

Can you share what the recipe is or ingredients are? Perhaps someone has a similar one and can share amounts?? I know some family recipes are held close though....

Is this a trick question?

Apologies but no, if the recipe was included, it is not showing up on my screen.

I did not post any part of the recipe. As most recipes it has brown sugar, vinegar, BBQ sauce, worcestershire sauce and onion juice.

Not what I first think of for a good shine recipe, but we can work with it..

Best I can suggest, being you want to play it close to the vest, is do a search for it. maybe a similar will show up. In this case, it looks like it could be a marinade. Pick an unusual ingredient and include that in the search. EXAMPLE: Marinade +onion +juice recipe.
Then the work begins, looking at recipe after recipe, hoping to find one that checks all the boxes, or one that checks all but one and experiment with that, adding the one missing ingredient until it seems right.
Good Luck
