National Southern Foods Day!!

I guess I didn't make it clear in my original post, but January 22 is already recognized as National Southern Food Day.

Well, I personally think, January 22 is way too early in the year to have Continental Southern Foods Day.  That needs to be May or June.  That way, we can organize parties and such.  And that time of year, there is good weather over about 90 percent of the population of this continent.

Agreed.  January 22 is too dang cold for some of us above the Mason Dixon to get out there and smoke up a bunch of southern food.  Or even if you aren't smoking the food but just cooking southern food in general, it is nice to have gatherings outside.  And don't get me wrong, I have smoked in single digits recently.  But it ain't fun if you have a smoker that has to be watched and checked on frequently.  Makes me want a WSM!

A late April / early May Southern Foods day would be great right as spring kicks off and before it gets above 90 degrees.

I know I sound like a baby when it comes to weather, I just love me some 50-60 degree days.  Perfect weather for smoking IMO.

We don't quit eating in winter, but single digit weather and ice on the ground that hasn't left for 2 weeks will make you want to leave the smoker covered up.  Especially if you have a pit that takes a lot of hands-on 'love' to get her warmed up and cooking.

I know the weather doesn't phase a lot of guys on here, but I was born and raised in GA and have lived there for my whole life, and just moved to Ohio 1.5 years ago.  So I am obviously still adjusting to the climate change.

Odd you said that.

Had watermelon tonight for desert! Grocery store last week had a bunch they had split in half so you could see the insides were good. 1/2 a melon was 3.50, its not an everyday thing at 3.50 and that's a couple a slices for Pop.

I thought it was pretty cool. Like I told him, it ain't July but its dang sure a good one for mid-February!

You'll appreciate that July watermelon better!

Moved from Georgia to Ohio, man what were you thinking?  And I am not talking about the weather here. 

As a Canadian truck driver, We as group, all deem Ohio as the most communist State there is, closely followed by Missouri.

 It was in Ohio, about 15 years ago, going from the Youngstown area down to Mason near Cincinnati, I was given a top level truckers inspection 3 time within 6 hours.  Law says they are to be done monthly.  On the last one, I pissed them off royally though.  He stuck the inspection sticker where I told him not to.  Federal law was called, marshals came and told him to remove it and place it where I told him to.  They argued for 15 minutes and the marshal told the DOT boy, one more word from you and you got jail tonight.  I pissed that whole inspection team off good.

No we do not think that, But you folks way down there, have much better weather than us up here in January, so it makes more sense if were doing this on both sides of this border, lets do when we can all get outdoors.

Yeah I didn't move to Ohio just for the heck of it. Moved here cause that's where I had a job offer, and I like getting paid...

OH does have more regulations and laws than your typical southern state. But i haven't had any trouble since we moved here. Haven't been stopped by a cop once, and I usually always drive 10 over.

What sucks about OH is that there isn't really great BBQ up here. There are a couple of joints that are good, but nothing to rave about and certainly not the same assortment as you would get south of KY.

I know this thread is a year old, but thought I would add to it with a Southern boy's perspective.

A classic Southern meal (and one of my favorites) would be:
Country fried steak with white peppered gravy
Mashed taters with same gravy
Pinto beans with cornbread
Fried green maters
Sweet Tea.

There are some variations on the plate that are acceptable and equally delicious:
Meatloaf substituted for the steak and gravy
Butter Beans instead of Pintos
Fried okra or squash instead of green maters.

Some other individual Southern foods include:
Tater salad
Sausage Balls (usually a holiday or party finger food)
Slaw Dogs.
A Southern delicacy that seems to have died since I was a kid is a Coca-cola in GLASS bottle with peanuts in it.

I guess I am gonna have to side with foam on this. Living in the South, everyday is southern food day. Collard greens with corn bread, (just to sop up the pot liker.) CF
