OK, so I had planned to enter the April throwdown. But, we've all had our "failures" in this hobby of ours and this time mine happened with something as simple as a sandwich. Regardless, I didn't see any similar entries (kudos to all entries, by the way!), so I thought I would share my misadventure so that somebody might run with this tasty idea.

My idea: a club sandwich featuring smoked roast beef and smoked turkey, bacon, avocado, tomato and onion, all grilled on sour dough bread.

Here's the start, rubbed the bottom round with Montreal seasoning and rubbed a small turkey breast with Strawberry's Grand Champion BBQ rub.

Here's the finished beef...it was spectacular. Cooked to 140* with oak...

Here's the finished turkey breast. It came a little dry, I'm used to cooking bigger breasts

But, I figured the dryness didn't matter with a sandwich because it could be dressed up a little...

So, I put the sandwich together, then was planning to grill it on my cast iron grill pan. I wanted to get diced garlic to stick to the bread, so I made the mistake of putting some oil in the pan...too much oil...It looked good at the halfway point....

But, when it came out, the bread was stuck to the pan and I was left with a pile of delicious ingredients that looked nothing like a sandwich...

I had some leftover meat and was going to put together a new sandwich, but I got bogged down in the weekday humdrum and never got a chance to do it.

too bad you didn't have time to retry......great idea.
btw - how was it....i know you didn't let it go to waste!

Thats a great looking pile of ingredients...bummer it didnt hold together for ya, but im sure it still tasted mighty fine.

Thanks guys...Nope, I didn't let it go to waste. I had to fork-and-knife it, but it tasted great! I wound up having sandwiches of the leftover meat throughout the week, but never got to re-create the club. Oh well, already planning for May's throwdown.

We need 3 to go please - looks like it would have been awesome
Like Rob asked - how was it?

You could have been a contender my boy. Well I'm glad you got to eat it and it really looked like it could have been awesome. Well then next time you will start sooner like I never do.

The good thing with messing up bbq is you get to eat the evidence...

I thought it looked great up to the point where you removed it from the grill...

Better luck next time

Meatball,
I agree with Paul, plus it looks & sounds like your taste buds & stomach won the prize.
