Most Obvvious ECB Mod

This has to have been brought up before, but I've not seen it. It hit me out of the blue today while contemplating a brisket smoke on my ECB. I think having a second modded up charcoal pan would be the best way to deal with the inevitable charcoal problems that arise with the ECB. That way, as your pan in use is dying down and heat starts to drop, but it is full of ash, despite your mods, you can have a second, ready to go with fresh hot coals. Pick the ECB up off of the first pan and set down on over the new pan. Minimal heat loss and just keep on going. Then, when the first one is cooled enough, dump the ashes and get it ready for the next switch. Every time I come up with an idea for it, I kick myself for getting rid of the old single grill one I used to have

That's a great idea, mule!! You know, they sell replacement parts at Brinkmann's website....I've thought about getting another charcoal basket so I could cut my old one up and use the ring to make a double-stacked ecb....maybe someday....

Good Idea.I made a basket with heavy screen with 1/4" square holes. four 2" bolts with large washers for legs.My first couple batches of coals go in the pan.Then I use the basket to keep the additional coals out of the ash.

good idea mule..........but i always just grab the fire pan...........take it to the back yard, and do like panning for gold...........move it around in a circular motion, with the added holes i added to the fire pan, the ash mostly "washes" out

I actually built a double stacked ecb this year. I used the lid from one as a burn pan, with a drilled charcoal pan inserted and grate on top. I have now removed the grate and built a charcoal basket from expanded metal.

I have 3 racks total and typically use the lowest one to hold a couple of bricks to hold the temps at about 235-250 consistently.

good pictures and good idea. do you have the procedure mapped out in a post anywhere?

a couple of questions -

it looks like this will take four loads of food, correct? do you need one waterpan or two? are the stacked smokers sturdy, or do you connect them with anything.

i just might have access to an extra ecb and might give this a try. if you ahve the procedure mapped out on a post, with tools, equipment hardware needed etc., i'd be grqateful for the link.
