Making smoker need to ask some stupid questions

Hey,
So I want to make my own smoker. Going to be off set. So first question.
Before I ask I should say I am building this smoker as an upright with an off set fire pit. ( I'm new so don't know the right terminology but willing to learn. Is it called a fire pit?). This smoker needs to fit on a patio. But it will be bricked over and part of my patio wall. Now the first of many questions... what size "fire pit" is the best for an off set smoker.
