as sept 11th nears again, lets not forget the 9-11-01 tragedy!

Here SHE is, the USS New
York, made from the
World
Trade
Center !

USS
New York

It was built with 24 tons of scrap steel from the World Trade Center .
It is the fifth in a new class of warship -
designed for missions that include special
operations against terrorists. It will carry a
crew of 360 sailors and 700 combat-ready Marines to be delivered ashore by helicopters and assault craft.

Steel from the World Trade Center was melted down in a foundry in Amite , LA to cast the ship's bow section. When it was poured into the molds on Sept 9, 2003, 'those big rough steelworkers treated it with total reverence,' recalled Navy Capt. Kevin Wensing, who was there. 'It was a spiritual moment for everybody there.'

Junior Chavers, foundry operations manager, said that when the trade center steel first arrived, he touched it with his hand and the 'hair on my

neck stood up. It had a big meaning to it for
all of us,' he said. 'They knocked us down. They
can't keep us down. We're going to be back.'

The ship's motto? 'Never Forget'

Man!
She's sweet!!

No offense Man, but it looks photoshopped and WHERE are the TURRETS?
Ship like that should have the biggest guns in the world.

Proud of such a ship though.

aint got no turrets. Is this one better?

Thanks for the link vman, I got it as an email, just passin it along. Very interesting link! Amphibious Transport dock. Thats why no guns! Cept the ones the marines are taking with them!

Seems like it might be better to refit the SS. United States, sitting in Philadelphia Harbor. Fastest Passenger ship ever, made to be converted to hold 15000 troops within 3 days, although outfitted as a luxury loner.
As close to unsinkable, unburnable as possible.
She looks bad from the outside, but she is in excellent condition.
Check your local PBS station for "Lady in Waiting" a new documentary about her.
She was once owned by the United States Maritime Administration and engendered pride in what was considered at one time, the United States Flag Ship.
She earned the Blue Riband (for speed in a transatlantic crossing) on her maiden voyage. Presidents and princes sailed on her, along with celebrities, military brass and titans of industry.

For more incredible info about her (and if you'd like to help the conservancy)

But that looks like a really great model, someone did a good job making it. The bridge is a bit squared off, not aerodynamic, and the wings don't go out far enough to be practicable, and the funnels don't look very utilitarian. I like the bulbous bow, but the bow should be more raked if she is to ply rough waters, such as those of the North Atlantic. And I'm not quite sure I remember tugs pulling directly on the bow! None that I have ever seen anyway!

And you should paint the lifeboats safety orange. More visible and probably some rule of SOLAS. Certainly of SOLAS 2010! (The new Safety Of Life at Seas about to go into affect that will unfortunately retire many beautiful ships and send them to the ship breakers at Alang for scrap. The SS France/Norway is there now.)

But nice job, anyway.
Hmm, Just to stay on topic, I'll bet they could really smoke some great meat in the kitchens of the SS United States. but the designer wanted not one stick of wood that could burn aboard her. Her furnishingswere made of metal! Hence, the ONLY two wooden items on board were a butcher block table and the Steinway Grand Paino. Gibbs reportedly even tried to get Steinway to make an aluminum piano, so great was his quet to make the ship totally fireproof!

So sorry, No REAL wood smoked meats smoked on board, I guess!

Karie,
Liner aficionado in her other persona

One must bow to obvious expertise. Impressive dissertation!

And Hell no I won't forget. I'm just calculating interest on the debt that's owed.

Dude, I meant you no harm. I'm PROUD to be an AMERICAN!

PROUD to support any 9 11 efforts.

Day I'll NEVER forget!

Skipped work that day as I was on the 35th floor of the second tallest building in Mpls and I didn't know what the H was going on.

My FAMILY was more important than going to work to a building that was evacuated anyway.

We WILL prevail.

some things don't need over "analizing", I think in the spirit we all mourn and as a previous amphib Navy man I can say we all remember and 09-11 holds a special place in all our (mine included) hearts.
Huge loss and in the long run all scores will be settled.
Thank all who have served past, present and future to protect our freedom, civilian and military.

Lost a very good friend on the roof that day, so it does hold a special place in my heart for him an all the others taken from us that sad day.

Let us return the favor many time over!

Summary of the eRumor:
Some interesting information about a new Navy amphibious assault ship, the USS New York, that has been built with 24 tons of scrap steel from the World Trade Center, which was felled by terrorists on September 11, 2001.The Truth:
The USS New York is one of several ships in the San Antonio class of amphibious transport dock ships. They are designed to transport and land troops, supplies, and equipment such as amphibious vehicles and helicopters. Designated as LPD. It is one of three similar ships that are being built and being given names that are associated with The Attack on America. In addition to the USS New York, the USS Arlington will be named because of the location of the Pentagon, which was hit by American Airlines flight 77. The USS Somerset will be named after the county in Pennsylvania in which United flight 93 crashed after being taken over by hijackers.

The ship is being built in New Orleans. Twenty-four tons of steel from the World Trade Center have been recycled for the project. About seven tons were melted down and poured into a cast to make the bow section of the ship's hull. The steel has been treated with reverence by the ship builders and several workers have postponed retirements for the honor of working on the USS New York. According to Naval records, several other ships have carried the name the USS New York. This new ship got the name the USS New York when New York governor George Pataki wrote to Secretary of the Navy Gordon England and requested that the Navy approve of the name in honor of the victims of September 11 and on ships that will be used to fight the war on terror.

The first was an armed gondola built by Revolutionary War General Benedict Arnold in 1776. She was one of several ships later burned to avoid capture.

The second was a frigate built in New York and commissioned in 1800. She she saw service in the Mediterranean in the war against the Barbary Pirates. She was in the Washington Navy Yard where she was burned by the British in 1814.

The next New York was built after the war of 1812 as part of 9 ships of the line to discourage a future war with Britain. The threat lessoned so she was never launched but she was burned by Union Forces to avoid capture at the start of the Civil War.

The fourth was a screw sloop that was built beginning in 1863 but also never got launched.

The fifth was an armored cruiser commissioned in 1893. She was used in the Spanish-American war and was the flagship of the admiral in the Battle of Santiago, which destroyed the Spanish fleet. She was later renamed the Saratoga and then later the Rochester.

The sixth was the battleship USS New York, commissioned in 1914. She saw service in World War I and World War II. She was used in the atomic testing in Bikini but survived without sinking. She was sunk off Pearl Harbor in 1948 as a target ship.

Finally, there was a nuclear submarine names the USS New York that was in service from 1979 until 1997 when she was decommissioned.

A real example of the eRumor as it has appeared on the Internet:
With a year to go before it even touches the water, the Navy's amphibious assault ship USS New York has already made history. It was built with 24 tons of scrap steel from the World Trade Center.

USS New York is about 45 percent complete and should be ready for launch in mid-2007. Katrina disrupted construction when it pounded the Gulf Coast last summer, but the 684-foot vessel escaped serious damage, and workers were back at the yard near New Orleans two weeks after the storm.
It is the fifth in a new class of warship - designed for missions that include special operations against terrorists. It will carry a crew of 360 sailors and 700 combat-ready Marines to be delivered ashore by helicopters and assault craft.
"It would be fitting if the first mission this ship would go on is to make sure that bin Laden is taken out, his terrorist organization is taken out," said Glenn Clement, a paint foreman. "He came in through the back door and knocked our towers down and (the New York) is coming right through the front door, and we want them to know that."
Steel from the World Trade Center was melted down in a foundry in Amite, La., to cast the ship's bow section. When it was poured into the molds on Sept. 9, 2003, "those big rough steelworkers treated it with total reverence," recalled Navy Capt. Kevin Wensing, who was there. "It was a spiritual moment for everybody there."
Junior Chavers, foundry operations manager, said that when the trade center steel first arrived, he touched it with his hand and the "hair on my neck stood up." "It had a big meaning to it for all of us," he said.
"They knocked us down. They can't keep us down. We're going to be back."
The ship's motto? - 'Never Forget'
