Keeping a fattie for later??

  1. Sorry if these questions have already been answered.  If so, please point me in that direction.

    My friends and I are going on a trip next weekend to go deer hunting.  We will be staying in the field so no fridge or electricity.  I was wanting to smoke a fattie the day before and bring it with us for lunch.

    I was thinking of making a pizza fattie.  My plan was to smoke it Thursday some time and eat it Friday for lunch. 

    1. Will it keep in the fridge overnight before we leave?

    2. What would be the best way to keep it from spoiling until lunch time the day after?

    3. Will the bacon become all soggy if I were to wrap it in a weave?

    4.  Anything else I forgot or am not thinking of?

    You should be fine. I usually make 2 or 3 at a time one for dinner that night and the other(s) for a day or so later. To reheat I usually cut them into thick slices and put them in a fry pan. They usually taste better the second day anyway.

    1- Yes

    2- Keep it at or bellow 40°F

    3- Not sure I understand your question.... I'd wrap it in plastic and/or aluminum then into ziplock bag and place in cooler with ice.

    4- I'm assuming you'll have a way to reheat it.
     
  4. It will be fully cooked meatloaf it will keep cold(less than 38°F) for several days. It will slice well cold for sandwiches and will heat well in thick slices in a skillet.

    Oh man that's gonna be one lucky bunch of hunters! Assuming you'll have a fire you can reheat in foil in the coals won't take long. Then you can re-crisp the bacon on a grate over the fire.

    We take the Mini-WSM with us now and smoke dinner at camp. We pre-make a bunch of meals that we freeze and know we can cook straight from frozen. We pack it all with dry ice. An uncooked fatty would be perfect for this.
     
  6. Excellent.  I was pretty sure I'd be OK but seein as how I have never made one before I wanted to make sure.  Thanks for your reply.
    Someone answered my question on #3.  I was worried the bacon would get soft and soggy from being cold for a day or so.  We will have a small Coleman cooktop to reheat it.
    Oh ya!  We plan on having some good food Friday since we will be at camp more and Saturday we will be eating something like PB & J because we aren't going to be back at camp until dark.  I'm really excited to go and will post some pictures once I decide on what type of fattie to make and get around to making it next week.
