I've been lurking for a while and finally decided to introduce myself. I originally had an electric R2 unit about 6 years ago which worked pretty well, but upgraded to a charcoal upright Brinkman (not the R2 type). I've turned out some pretty good eats but always had problems with wind and cold here in IA, so I've just purchased an MES. This was after a debate to get a Smoky Mountain Smoking Pro.
Yesterday I tried out a turkey breast with mesquite and it turned out pretty good. I think I like the flavor of my old smoker better, though. I just want to be able to smoke large pieces of meat w/o having to babysit all night and day.
Anyhow, "Hi" and hopefully I will be able to share some things with others as you guys do so well.

Sam

Edit:
Wow, totally missed the Roll Call portion of the forum!

Welcome to the SMF Sam!! Check out Jeff's free 5-day course if you haven't already. Look around and if you need help let us know.

Welcome Sam! And as far as wind/cold... WIND BREAK! I wrap my WSM in a natural fiber carpet hunk. Some use 3 sided plywood...ANYTHING to keep the wind offa the smoker. Worth 50° easy in nasty weather.

And I'm a charcoal man myself for now anyway heh!

I'm new and think this is a great idea to get/give advice. Nice to meet all of you and hope to find some people from the Las Vegas area here.

Thanks for the welcome everyone. I did get the 5 day e-course and it had some very helpful info. I plan on a smoking marathon until Thursday to break in the smoker for the best taste possible with the picnic roast. I threw a bottom round roast on today and have a chicken for tomorrow.

I wish I could get the Char-griller smoking pro as well, but I already had to give up my charcoal grill for the MES. My wife thinks four grills/smokers are too many. She just doesn't understand...

Can't stand them, maybe its the fans that bother me more.

Great idea with the blanket and sand, but I wonder how well it would stay on my vertical smoker. I'm going to have to get one anyway. Maybe my wife can cut and sew one with a door flap or something.

Way to make a guy feel welcome everyone. Thanks!
