Yep, it's a sad Sunday at my barn. I had actually bought these over 3 weeks ago but didn't get a chance to cook them. So, when I left for work I ask the Mrs. to put them in the freezer and told her I'd cook them when I got home. So I roll back home a few days ago and I pulled them out of the freezer and stuck them in the fridge. This morning I go down to prep the ribs and fire up the Yoder. Damn! when I opened that package it was rough people. Strong odor. Terrible! Stink! So I go straight to the internet and start hunting info on what the hecks going on. I cleaned them up with water and I let them set for about 10 minutes. Didn't seem to notice the smell too bad so I prepped them and threw them in the cooker for a 2-2-1 rib session. When I opened the door after 2 hours the smell hit me right off the bat. Nope, not gonna happen. I pulled them and shut the smoker down.

As I was informing my beautiful bride of what had happened she sheepishly confessed she had let them sit in the fridge almost another week before she put them in the freezer............OUCH!

I think I'll head to the rib crib for some ribs.................................
3 racks in the trashcan. I'm bummed.

Yep, been there done that. Man, that stinks (ha!), but at least you got to the bottom of it without actually consuming them.

We had a similiar scenario with chicken once..get chicken in summer..hot..humid..well. My mom took said car and we took another, still had more stuff to do. She ended up forgetting two of the packages of chicken in the backseat, so it sat there a weekend and the garage stunk to high heaven. We thought like a rat died in the garage..so she realized what it was. Sneaks it into the house and puts it in the sink under dishes for -another- two days... ugh! It was so horrible and all because she was to busy buying rummage sale junk we ended up throwing out because it was so beaten up!

Sorry to hear that. I have bought ribs that smelled right out of the package... took them back

Well, the day wasn't a total loss. Loaded up the wife and hit the water. When you live on the lake it's actually a no brainer. Texoma is known for the Striper fishing and right now the fishing is good. We're having a fish fry. I've gonna smoke some of this striper someday soon.

Sorry for your loss :( I've been in the same boat, rinsed them until the stink was gone and hoped for the best. The smell was there even when cooked and I served them to no one. The nose knows!

At least you made the right call and nobody got sick from tainted meat. That's never a good thing. You can always get some fresh meat and then enjoy your ribs the right way.

That is too bad, my Son called me one time & said are ribs supposed to smell bad when you open the package?
I said no way, there should be no smell. And he said all the ribs he gets from the store smell when he opens them up.
He lives in a small town in Kansas and I guess they were Smithfield ribs, but probably way past the sell by date or something. He thought it was normal & has been eating them. I don't know how he hasn't been taken to the emergency room, but he says it's all good. I told him never eat them again, but I think he still does!
