Help me choose a proper tri-tip

I am not so sure here on Long Island. I have yet to hear of anyone knowing this cut.

As has been discussed at length previously. The availability of this cut is extremely variable by region. In Utah I have only found trimmed. Never seen untrimmed. Some have none. Just bizarre.

I've found them at Sam's in North Texas upon occasion but I haven't seen them in a while. I've cooked 2 of them (2 pack from Sam's) and I know now I screwed up when carving. Looking forward to another shot at this boom'a'rang looking chunk of beef.

I can usually find certified Angus Choice Tri Tip at my local Walmart of all places.
They also carry what I suspect may be select grade Tri Tip.
I plan on trying the select grade one of these days to try and save some money.

Low & behold ............... Sam's had several 2 packs of Tri Tip today and of course I couldn't pass up the temptation. I hope to cook the 1st one between Fri & Sunday.
