I am eyeing a GMG on Craigslist and would be interested in folks thoughts. It appears to be in good shape. He says it is Wifi, but he's not used the Wifi.

Anything I should look out for or check before buying?

ELECTRIC Components !
I almost bought a used pellet smoker.
Then I said:?
Am I willing to pay $100 or more to repair it? NO!
Bought a new Grill instead
Not to mention it is better than what I was looking at!?
That’s my 2c !
Not sure what you’re budget is?

Love my GMG, for the record... I've never used the wifi on mine either... but at the end of my garage my wifi is too far away. At the right price... go for it!

Thanks everyone. I'll likely pull the trigger and buy it. I've been looking for a pellet smoker to compliment the propane smoker I have, although I feel a certain laziness coming on, no longer needing to tend to the temperature and wood chunks.

It's not laziness... we get wiser as we get older! We'll, it's my excuse lol!

Not lazy, just easier. I started on a WSM and hesitated for a while on buy my Rec Teq. I should have bought it sooner.

Had a Daniel Boone GMG for years… was always pretty reliable. Had to replace a few things here and there… but that’s with anything…

Can you try it out before you buy it? I'm with Jim_C. I gave my Traeger Ironwood to a friend two months after I used it last. Had kept it in the garage, and it worked like a beauty the last time I used it. Put it in the truck, drove it 20 minutes, unloaded it and....PID was out. Something like a $400 replacement part, and I felt like a @$$.

If they are cool with you bringing some pellets and firing it up, I think its worth it.

I pulled the trigger. The smoker was $150 on Craigslist. Eight years old, but it looks like it's been well cared for.

He fired it up and walked me through the process, so I know it worked there. I'll unload this morning. This afternoon will be a turkey breast to break it in. That will be a different thread.

Thanks for all of the input.

Turkey
Rack it up if possible in
Use a pan with apple juice, half inch
Then add water if needed
Making a good base for gravy

Well........I threw on a turkey breast. The temperature on the display (237) was off from the temperature I set (250), and the temperature I set was off from the probe I had in next to the turkey breast (262).

25 degrees. And it was the same 25 degree span when I set the temperature at 220, 240, and 250.

I'll go through the insides again, make sure the diffusers are aligned correctly and clean the probe, as recommended through some of the online research and see where it goes.

I covered the top diffuser with foil for ease-of-cleanup. Maybe that had something to do with it.

I'm also fighting the Wifi. I cannot get it to stay connected to the network. I moved one of the Wifi mesh units to within 10' and it's better at connecting. It would be nice to get the firmware update, but I need it to stay on the network.

There is a retrofit board on Amazon I may decide to get. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0728BWVWH?smid=A35UO8G1Y5J0RU&psc=1

Just what an old retired guy needs....the learning curve for a new-to-me smoker.

Try connecting to the 2.4 side of the router if you haven’t already .

Yes.....I read a few forums on the internet where they suggested setting up the guest as strictly 2.4. I did that and it helped, but was still disconnecting. Another thing I read was to dedicate an IP address. I need to get the MAC address to do that, and last night I just got to the point where I'd deal with it today.
