Green Beans and Deer

My first bush beans became a meal for a large doe this past weekend, who actually came back for seconds on Saturday afternoon.  Since I have another 40 plants coming up right now, are there any good ideas out there on how to keep her away?  A shotgun won't work as this is a residential area.

I'm thinking about building a cage-like structure from yard fencing to protect the bush beans and putting up bamboo stakes with fishing lines to guard the pole beans.

    Any thoughts?

    Thank you.

    I know a 5' high fence won't help.

There are some mixtures you can put together, and put on, but you have to put new on after every rain.

Also if you know a barber, human hair keeps them away.

  3. About the only thing that might work is an electric fence. I have tried the hair and it doesn't last long. Soap didn't work and the fishing line trick lasted only a short time till they tore it down.

I built a cage with hoops made out of PVC pipe and bird netting so I can have blueberries. I had trouble with deer on those and birds as the main enemy .

A friend of mine is putting in a solar electric fence for his crop.

  4. You could give one of these a try Scarecrow Motion Activated Sprinkler. I found it on Amazon and they have good reviews.

Here ya go. Dig a big hole, then fill it with ashes. Plant peas around the hole and wait for them to grow. Then, when a deer squats to take a pea, kick it in the ash-hole!

Sorry I don't have any real advice for you haha.

I have heard you can spray it with a solution of water which had a bunch of garlic cooked down in it and the deer won't mess with it.

I also hear that the human hair trick worked too. <shrug>

Sorry Dave its a dumb animal, it don't appreciate the taste of fine garlic.

Around here both of those work, but they have to be redone after every rain. And the last couple years that would be just about every day around here.

Some mixes have rotten eggs in them too.

I was told that planting marigolds would deter deer--they hate them. So I planted them all aroung my garden.  Then one afternoon we looked out to see 3 deer standing at my garden eating my marigolds.  LOL  Sorry but the only answer is a shotgun--just use it in the middle of the night and most people will just say whf was that noise.  Then into the garage, close the door, hang it and into the freezer.  Not your most upstanding response, but it works.

Electric fence then take some aluminum foil and wrap several places and coat with peanut butter. They learn quick where not eat.
