Hello,
I am new to the smoking meat forums. I enjoy smoking many different meats. I have plans to building 3 smokers out of old fuel oil tanks. I also acquired some 55gal metal tanks that I thought I could convert into the firebox for the reverse flow smoker. Thoughts to if you think that would work and if so, should I use fire brick on the bottom of the fire box? I live in ohio and I have had problems in the winter getting my vertical propane smoker warm enough. Thoughts on if you think I will have the similar issues with the old tanks? If so any suggestions on fixing this issue. Thanks for your anticipated responses.

Good morning and welcome to the forum from another hot and humid day here in East Texas, and the best site on the web.   Lots of great people with tons of information on just about everything.

Welcome to the forum . You came in as they were trying to get an all new format going here. Hope you can get some info in the search engine using key words to find helpful threads to look at..
Maybe post a topic in the "builds" topics (if you haven't already). I just wanted to say hi and welcome..
Good luck tinkering there.

Smokeshack,
Welcome to SMF, this the place to find all your BBQ smoking answers. Search is your friend, lots of answers already here.

I have a little experience with 55 gallon drum cookers. They are thin skinned and winter makes it rougher to maintain temps. Use fire brick to line bottom of cook chamber and firebox if at all possible. You can get bricks for wood stoves and save some money. When the wind is up you can use a welding blanket to help with heat loss. Locate your cooker under cover out of the wind.

I'm in Ohio too, near Columbus.
Good luck,
RG
