I am looking to buy a smoker and would like input on which one to get.  I would prefer a propane operated system because I'm just not into the whole electric smoker thing.  Not looking to spend a whole lot of money but would like something that is dependable and reasonably durable.  I want to get into making jerky and this will be the main use to begin with but I want to branch out into smoking other meats as well.  Thanks for your help.

The GOSM (Great Outdoors Smokey Mountain) now manufactured under the brand Landmann is a good starter unit. With a 34" high smoke chamber, 14" depth and 2 widths (16" and 20"). I have a 3405-GW (16" wide) from back in 2000...used it for 8 or 9 years, and it's been out in the weather the whole time. Easy assembly and they're pretty much ready to season and start smoking, and they aren't expensive. I've made some rather tasty eats with little rig, including pork butts, picnics, cured sausages and salamis, Canadian bacon (just to name a few), and, beef jerky, of course. Lots of old members here started with a GOSM, and many still have and use theirs.

Don't forget to drop by the ROLL CALL forum and introduce yourself...tell us a little about your cooking experience so we can more easily help you with any questions you may have about smoking/grilling in the future, and of course, so we can properly welcome you to the SMF family.

I have had a GOSM 3405BGW Widebody for a little over a year now and use it almost every weekend. After a few easy inexpensive mods I really love this smoker.

I have had 2 GOSMs and I love them super easy to use and very durable for the price. I have had the 16" model for 6 yrs and now the wide body for 2 yrs.  the only problem I have ever had was the propane regulator went out on my 16" model after 5 yrs. I love them and would definitly buy another one
