This is wood a guy is giving to me for free but before I get it I would like to know what type wood it is and if it is worth getting to smoke meat on? I can have all of the wood, but is it worth it. It would solely be for smoking meat.

Thanks

Don't get it . I don't care what type it is . Been in the weather to long .

Grey outside means nothing. I would split some and then look at the wood grain. You should be able to tell if it is hardwood. Next test might be to toss some in the outdoor fire pit or home fireplace (make sure it is hardwood first before using in the fireplace). Burning aroma and burning characteristics may help further identify it.

Take a few closer photos and photos of the freshly split areas and post them.

I agree with the above post. In addition, the firewood is uncovered and needs to be split and covered to dry out. Looks like some of the logs has fungus (mushrooms) Tells me it’s been sitting for a long time.

Looks like Elm.... because he got tired of trying to split it... been there... tried that.... Elm will make your food taste like U-KNOW-WHAT..
