Newser) – Guys, this is for you: Hoppy beers contain a plant estrogen that may cause feminine attributes, including man boobs. According to author and herbalist Stephen Buhner, hops are "female flowers of the hop plant" that contain serious amounts of phytoestrogen, a plant estrogen that women have used as an herbal medicine, Fox News reports. That's why gals have taken hops to ease menopause and boost milk production, among other things, Vice notes in an article about Buhner's work. "Yes, you read that right: Hops are giving men man boobs," says Vice.

Fox notes that India Pale Ale is heavy on hops, and craft brewers use 400% to 500% more hops than the typical big-name beer. But not everyone is buying the theory: "I'm inclined to think that the man boobs are more the result of the high number of calories commonly found in hoppy (high alcohol) beers," reads a comment in the Vice article. Another notes that hop content in "a 5-gallon batch of beer—let alone a single beer—is infinitesimal." As if man-boob fear isn't enough, both articles also refer to "brewer's droop," or male infertility caused by beer—which can last for a year after heavy drinkers stop guzzling, the Telegraph reported two years ago.

I don't watch much TV news and I certainly don't bother watching opinion shows. I get my news from the radio, from sources like NPR and the BBC who are not trying to sell their audiences to advertisers.

Let's dig into this a little bit.

First, what's phytoestrogen? According to Wikipedia, it's a group of chemicals made by plants, able to mimic the estrogen found in mammals. Wikipedia is considered unreliable because anyone can edit it, but the article cites resources including a paper published in Environmental Health Perspectives, a journal from the National Center for Biotechnology Information, part of the US National Library of Medicine at the National Institues of Health. That research paper's abstract says plants use these chemical defenses to "modulate the fertility" of herbivores - that includes us.

Second, what's the source? Searching for Steven Buhner brings up an article of his published by the Foundation of Gaian Studies, in which he says hops were required in beer by the Protestants, who approved of its tendency to supress male sexual drive ("brewer's droop"). Then, who is Vice? (Failure to identify on first reference is a journalistic no-no.) That turns out to be vice.com publishing an article by Raquel Smith Callis, a Utah herbalist, and here we get to the man boobs. But Callis simply makes the man-boob claim, without backing it up with any supporting facts other than referring to brewer's droop.

Third, what's Fox doing in this? They picked up the Callis article but they ignored everything in it except the man boobs. (Searching for Fox+Callis+boobs brings up a bunch of other hits including Fox and boobs, try it.) Searching for Fox+man+boobs brings up the Fox article, which cites a plastic surgeon's article in Muscle & Fitness. The Fox article recommends staying away from hoppy beers. Fox is under the same corporation as the FX network, who, according to the LA Times, has a major sponsorship deal with Miller-Coors.

Fourth, so what? Estrogens in hops reduce fertility and sexual performance, but that's boring and bad news for the beer sponsors anyway. But man boobs bring a giggle factor that makes a story go viral, as it is here on SMF. More eyeballs for Fox!

Thanks Dave.
