first tri tip

I don't have any tri tips around here, but any kind of beef like that, I like Hickory and/or Cherry.

Bear

I do mine with Pecan or Cherry

I like pecan.

Or wine barrel, if it can be sourced.

EDIT: Since touching on abrrel, which is Oak, I would argue that beef and oak practically go hand-in-hand, like Jeeps and busted axles.

You wouldn't go wrong with hickory.  As stated before, it is a matter of taste.  Traditional Santa Maria tri tip was done over red oak if you have any of that available.  I have never used red oak, so I don't know how it would compare to regular oak.  Hmmm?

Good luck and good smoking!

I like cherry and beech
