First time smoker

Hello. First timer here. Got a pit boss 2 series smoker electric. Want to try tri tip as my first smoke. But I have a few questions. Going to use pit boss recipe for this one.

Recipe doesnt specify when to add wood chips or for how long. Would it be for the entire length of cook time or just beginning or end?

Welcome to the site. I'm not familiar with your smoker, but when smoke steaks I let the smoke flow the whole time.
