I was planning on Christening my new smoker with a brisket this weekend but would it be better to start with something else. I have never smoked before but brisket doesn't seem that difficult from reading but I am sure you all may have a different opinion.

Brisket can be tricky. I think the easiest to start with would be a pork butt (bone in shoulder). They tend to be very forgiving and pulled pork is yummy.

Chicken is a good choice too.
It's cheap & easy to smoke.
I wouldn't start with a brisket.

Thanks for the advice. I may do some cochinita pibil instead.

Pork shoulder is a great choice to start with, they are very forgiving and hard to mess up.
