my 37 year old son wants an entry level smoker , any suggestions ? it would need to be a goof proof as possible as he lives 1000 miles from me so the only help i can give is over the phone
i think he is looking for something in the $300.00- $ 500.00 range

i think the cabinet style is more what he is looking for , i'll check them out

I got a MES 140s. Unless I some day have -alot- of money to spend, I'm not likely to get any thing better. I like the set and forget, I don't even need to baby it if I use my AMNPS. Just remember if he gets electric, get him to purchase the AMNPS.

PS; if I ever end up with 4 grand burning a hole in my pocket I'll get a fancy set and forget pellet smoker grill ;)

Unless he is really hardcore about getting into smoking I would avoid any kind of offset type smoker. I would agree with the suggestions that you have already seen. A Weber Smokey Mountain in the 22" size or an MES 40" sound like exactly what the doctor ordered. They are both in that price range and will both work really well. I think if I were starting out again electric would be the way I would have gone to begin with. I still would have found my way to an offset eventually but those MES units are really versatile.

i sent him the link to the Master built , i think he like's the bluetooth function

MES is a great option. AMNPS needs to accompany that for hassle free smoking. Unless he wants to add chips every 30 minutes

to many acronyms on this site, what the blazes is AMNPS ?
doesn't anyone on this site know how to speak in whole words ?

thank you George !!
i use a commercial gas cabinet smoker and never needed a bunch of acronyms when i am talking about smoking plus it helps that i know how to spell and type

Masterbuilt electric smoker is what I started on. Pretty much fool proof. Can set the temperature and let it run until it gets to the desired meat temp. I went through 2. Each lasted about 3 years. The digital controls tend to crap out after that. It was just over $300 at Sam's Club. Mine never had bluetooth so I can't comment on that. Buy online and they will ship to your house.

If he goes with the MES 40 Generation #2.5, he'll have an awesome Smoker, and he'll have all of this to help him along the way:
Just click on "Bear's Step by Steps".
All Kinds To Choose From.

All he'll need to go with it is an AMNPS and a Digital wireless set of Therms (Like the Maverick ET-732 or similar).
