BD Seeks the Cure

St Patricks day is just around the corner and I thought I'd start gathering all the goodies for corned beef. While shopping today at our local Super Duper Mega Goliath Mart, I picked out a nice flat and found the pickling spices. But I couldn't find any insta cure 1,  I must have been looking puzzled because after a few moments of staring blankly at the shelves "Bobby" came up and asked if he could help.

Bobby: Can I help you find something sir?

Brian: Yes Bobby do you know where the Prague powder 1 is located? Cant seem to find it.

Bobby: Sir?

Brian: Insta Cure 1.  Used for curing meats and such. I've looked in the canning area and salt / spices. I can't...

Bobby: Yeahhh I think I know what your looking for.  Had a guy ask for it a few weeks ago. The boss said we don't have it cause its dangerous. 

Brian: Yup. You have to be careful with it to be sure.  So no cure?

Bobby No sir ....Dangerous.  Can I hep you find anything else? 

​Brian: Yeah... as a matter of fact. Got bleach?

Bobby: Yes sir!! Isle 12 next to the laundry soap.

Brian: Great. I'm also in need of some antifreeze.  

Bobby: Got it. Same isle just a little further down. 

Brian:  Are Motor oil and tar remover in the same isle?

​Bobby: YES sir it is!

​Brian: Thank you my friend.  But no cure correct?

Bobby: Real sorry about that. But as the boss says it's suppose to be dangerous.

If I may play Devil's advocate here for just a second. Bleach, antifreeze and the other things you mentioned are all known hazards. They're not associated with food and aside from little children or pets ingesting them, one would have to be a complete moron to poison himself with any of these things. Pink salt, on the other hand, is a food product. It doesn't have a skull and crossbones on the label and can quite easily be confused with items we consume every day. As it's not widely known, most folks likely aren't familiar with its safe usage.
Yes, YOU know how to use it properly, but go down the street and ask 10 of your neighbors. I'd guess 8 out of 10 responses would involve shrugged shoulders.

You know, as soon as I hit "reply" I regretted it. Thought about editing it but then figured I'd already posted it so let it stay. I didn't mean to pi$$ on your Cheerios, honestly. It was a funny story and the irony wasnt lost on me. It's just that I'd just recently had a conversation regarding a very similar situation about everyday items that were once commonly available but nowadays, due to lack of knowledge and understanding, are regarded as taboo. My take was that with a little effort and marketing, the public could Be made aware of the usefulness and safe handling of such dangerous things and we could all relax.
Yeah, I guess I like a good discussion but don't always present my points tactfully. Sorry about that.

Are you kidding me? Hey... you and I are pals.  I've respected your comments, direction and suggestions for a number of years . Including the one you made on this thread. Relax my friend. I've never found Cure #1 in the grocery stores here. However I have found it at our sporting good stores that have smokers and sausage supplies. This wasn't always available until the last couple years. The only problem is the package sizes are super small, maybe a 1/4 cup is all and really expensive. Best bet is online. Amazon has had the best prices too and as a prime member it's two day free shipping.

Hey BD, your about 100 + miles from me,  I think all the Grocery store clerks are trained at the same place.  I went to my local grocery store the other day to pick up a few things horseradish being one of them, Had one of those senior moments and couldn't remember where it was so I asked a clerk, Took me to produce first and said it should be here somewhere, I said No prepared horseradish   OH --  then we went to the condiment section and she said here it is horseradish mayo and mustard, I said No PREPARED , about that time Memory came back and said "Come with Me" I took her over to the refrigerated section and said here it is, now you know. She said " If you knew where it was Why did you ask and walk all over the store" ?  I said I'm from corporate and was testing you, She said "I'm not in trouble am I ? "
