I'm headed to the Milwaukee area for a wedding labor day weekend. I've never been to Milwaukee and have some extra time off work and I'm thinking of spending a couple of days before the wedding exploring the city.

If you're from Milwaukee tell me, what I should make sure I see and what I should avoid?

We're thinking of staying at an independent hotel, something old with some character. I found three possible choices online; the Astor, The Knickerbocker and the Plaza. Any comments on these?

What's the coolest thing in Milwaukee?

Also, is there public transportation in the city?

Thanks much!

check out the new art museum. I cant recomend going inside because I have never been in it but the archetecture is awesome. Also there are some really nice parks on lake michigan. During the summer there are festivals every weekend on the summerfest grounds so you may want to check out what is going on.. Miller brewery tour, lakefront brewery tour. Lots of good stuff going on. It does have public transportation but I have no experience with it except the park and ride which I use for summerfest. At night the new overpass is really sweet, it has blue lights all over the place and you can see a lot of the city while driving into it. I would say go see the brewers but they are out of town this weekend...
