I shoot a Bowtech. I absolutely love it!
There are a lot of bow manufacturers out there and they all make really good bow. You really have to be the judge yourself.
It just depends on how deep your wallet is and your comfort zone.
Buy one that fits you, one that you can handle comfortably.
Don't let someone try and tell you that you need a 70 or 80 pounder either. I've had mine set at 60# since I've had it and I've killed big bucks, ferrule hogs, rabbit, squirrel and more.
And.... practice practice practice
Just my 2 cents.

While we're on the subject, here's a little invention I designed for those like me who don't like heights. I bow hunt from the ground and needed a stand. I have about 10 of them made up. Trying to find a legit patent atty.
It adjusts to just about any bow setup.

Just had to throw this one in...

Well mine is a Redhead Kronik from BPS which is made by Diamond a division of Bowtech, So I guess I shoot a Bowtech. Like said above...practice...practice...practice. The arrow pic is 4 arrow's at 30 yards just for reference.

Nice looking bow, great invention, get a patent soon on that, and nice looking harvest!

I shoot a Darton it was cheap, light and short just what I was looking for at the time. Now I get superstitious about my bow and I don't change a thing or let anyone touch it.I like shooting things and bow and arrow are as fun as anything heck I even like shooting spit balls.
As far as buying used I would caution you on that.A guy might have only shot it 10 times a year or 10,000 a year it's hard to tell.If you do go down that path check a pawn shop they don't have the heavily used bows because if you like a bow you would never pawn it.

For starting out, certainly do not need a new bow. This time of year, craigslist has many many bows listed, at around here. I'm sure the economy has something to do with it. With the advances in bow making over the past 10 years, its hard to get a bad bow, especially among the top brands. I have shot and hunted with several and settled on Mathews a few years back. An expensive bow, but one that will serve me probably till the day I die. Parker makes a very nice bow, and new ones off the shelf are very affordable. BowTech makes a great bow, as does Hoyt, PSE and the higher end bows by Bear. Bows today are soooo much better than ones made 20 years ago, smooth, forgiving when shot. You can get a fantastic used bow off craigslist for 200 bucks. There are several bowhunters who have to have the latest bow that comes out, like a teenager who has to have the latest cell phone, and you can get a good used one very cheap, shoot it for a while to see if you like it, and if not, resell it without a huge layout of cash. Archery is absolutely addictive, whether it be target, 3-D or hunting. I would give anything to go back in time and start shooting earlier than I did.

Learn to shoot properly from someone who KNOWS. An archery instructor is well worth the investment and a good pro shop will either have one or recommend one. Developing bad shooting habits are hard to break later on. Join an archery range. The people there are like the people here, they will help you with anything you need to know. I promise you, once you send a few shafts down range, you will be hooked
