AMNPS Smoked Sea Salt with Q-View

    I know salt isn't nearly as interesting as hunks of smokey meat but keep in mind the holidays are approaching and it makes a unique gift for co-workers and friends or family members at holiday gatherings. I like it on hot buttered popcorn or sprinkled over smoked honey almonds since they don't always take smoke too well.

    I've smoked salt on a foil pie pan before but didn't feel like it got as much smoke as I wanted. I picked up these splatter screens at the dollar store and they seemed to work better in my opinion.


    I washed and dried then poured coarse sea salt on each one. I place a paper plate under each to catch any salt that falls through. After pouring the salt I use a basting brush to flatten/even out the salt on the screens.


    All ready for some smoke.

    After 10 hours of smoke. Threw in some pepper jack for the last 3 hours just because.



    If you want a fine smokey/salty powder you can throw it in the coffee/spice grinder for a few seconds and presto!

    I have a couple Himilayan salt discs from salt works to cook seafood and thin meat on.

    I love my salt - I have 15 varieties including truffle and Tahitian vanilla - I love my smoked salt

    Those look awesome! Never heard of em before. How long do they last?

    I'd love to learn about tahitain vanilla. Sounds killer.

    Good stuff and so easy as you have seen,we use it on everything. The salt will retain it's flavor for about a year(if it last that long)[​IMG].

    I LOVE the color!!

    Smoked salt is an awesome give away for X-Mas and very EZ to do

    How about "Smoked Peppercorns" to go with the smoked salt?

    Todd -- I smoked peppercorns last time I smoked salt.  Just as easy, and very good.  My brother had given me some bourbon smoked cracked pepper, and it was really good.  When that ran out I made my own.  If you are smoking salt, you may as well smoke some pepper!

    Teez -- GREAT idea with the splatter rings.  Those are awesome.  I used some fine mesh strainers, but they were not as fine as the splatter shield, and a bit fell through.  I'm on the hunt for those now!

    Nice Job Teez!!!

    I never though of smoking my coarse salt !!!!!

    I always threw a thin layer of regular non-iodized in a foil pan, and stir it after an hour or two.

    Thanks for reminding me----I haven't done any for awhile!!!!!

    Question----Did the screens clean up easily?

    That looks great I am going to try that.  I have ben playing with a recipe for tequilla/lime sea salt.  Will take picture next I make it. 
  14. That sounds really good. I never tried smoking salt before. I put a little coarse kosher salt in about a half hour ago with some Jack Daniels oak. Can't wait to try some.

    Hey Teez----Thanks a lot Buddy!!!

    I sent my Super-Shopper (Mrs Bear) to get a couple of those Splatter Screens at the Dollar Store.

    I gave her a sniff of the picture of your screens, and her ears perked up, as she got on the trail, just like a Bloodhound on the trail of an escaped prisoner.

    Two hours later, she came home with a trunk-load of groceries, and two 11" Splatter Screens exactly like yours.

    Now I'm ready!!!

    I'll have to try the peppercorns.

    The screens cleaned off real easy with some hot water. The only problem I had was they aren't the sturdiest which I somewhat expected from the dollar store. I did a second round the following day and now after cleaning they're getting a little rust like color on them and one of the screens has a slight tear. Again it's dollar store so I can't complain too much being that I now have over 2 lbs of smoked salt. Try on fresh popped buttered popcorn. [​IMG]

    A smokey version sounds like a hit!

    I let it sit for a day when I can then use it.

    There is no aging but you need to seal the smoked salt in a baggie or container or it looses the flavor of the smoke pretty fast

    The Tahitian Vanilla salt has a very mild salt flavor and is mostly a vanilla flavor. It is great to use in baking.
